I'm super cautious about viruses, malwares and other nasty stuff. I've got premium licence in an antivirus program, rarely downloading something and if so only from reliable sources and immediatelly after download is finished before opening it i scan it. No unknown flash drives ever of course. + bunch of other safety procedures. But still across all my cautiousness are during regular computer scans threats found. How's that possible?

Speaking as an IT professional with a background in security, the warnings in this video are spot on. A USB flash drive with a malicious payload left lying around for some curious person to pick it up and plug it in is one of the easiest and most common attack vectors. It can be partially mitigated by disabling autorun (or using an operating system that doesn't have autorun in the first place) but even still you should never, ever plug in any unfamiliar USB device, ESPECIALLY flash drives.

Wow! I used to work at a banquet/conference place in the U.S. Finding drives (among other oddities) was common. Granted this was ten years ago but, I plugged more than one into my computer. To find a clue of the owner, I swear! I'm feeling lucky right now

I once picked up an 8gig flash drive off the street a few years back. It took me few weeks to finally plug it into my computer only to find out that it was a business flash drive. I’ve had someone do something like this before, someone left a USB drive on my table after “slipping” on the floor and walked away (didn’t notice it until I was about to leave, so I plugged it into my laptop... it had malware on it, but it couldn’t affect me as I was using Ubuntu, (A version of Linux). As windows and Linux software aren’t compatible with each other, in the end I got a free 32gb Kingston data traveller after I formatted the drive

I had a computer teacher in school that knew I loved tech. She found an interesting looking flash drive online and got it. Naturally I took it to my computer in the computer lab and long behold it was a malicious device. It literally yoinked every file, program, and account that was signed into it. Luckily we all had to wipe our accounts from the school computers after class. But still, it was kinda funny watching her face as the horror of a $3k computer got wiped and fried.

Yeah, unless it's a re-branded USB-KILLER, just test it in a powerbank instead first, or a router with a USB port bought from a thrift store. If it gets shot, the stick can be pried apart and used for other purposes, such as a bug zapper (because that is essentially, what it is).
Rest assured, it cannot *physically damage any component of your machine* if it's an ordinary USB flash drive. If you suspect it has malware, format it using a NON-WINDOWS operating system, such as freeDOS (32GB or smaller) or GNU/Linux in a live environment. Don't bother using it with windows.

Wouldn't it just be easier to have a compact device that copies all the data from the drive and then wipes the original? Then you could use a custom secure system (preferably a virtual machine operating on Linux) on a closed shell to take as much time as you want to decrypt what's really on there, and perhaps even figure out where it came from.

Step 1. Open usb to check if it has a keyboard emulator, a killer or data
Step 2. If it has data plug it in to a linux machine as the virus will expect windows and not work if a virus was in the drive
Step 3. If an exe is there but you don't know if it is a virus make a windows virtual machine without an internet connection and passthrough the usb

You could always just use a secondary computer with no internet connection in order to check the contents of random flash drives you find. All companys and individuals that refurbish and repair computers always have a separate system for recovering data and wiping drives whose contents are not known. I don’t see why people who want to see the contents can’t just use a second computer for this. Or at the very least unplug the hard drive from your computer boot it with a live cd and then plug in the mysterious flash drive to check its contents

The memory stick hacking to make the memory read as more has to do with the driver programs stored on the memory sticks. When they first came out the driver files were accessable. But over time they started encrypting and hiding the files so the home user couldn't access them. Those driver files are what reads out the space on the drives the hackers just rewrote the drivers values to make it do that. (computer programing class in highschool)

I found an obviously used USB stick in my very used van when I took the seats out. I did check it out. Apparently it belonged to a family member of the person who owned the van prior to the person I bought it from, and it was a slide show for a tribute to somebody at their funeral. If you've been to a funeral in the last 10 years or so you've probably seen one. My attempts at finding family members or interested people were fruitless, and eventually I forgot it in a pants pocket one day, it got washed and that was the end of it.

This happened to me when I was a child, My sisters and I found a “ lost “ USB and asked our parents to pluck it into our family computer, luckily my parents said a responsible “ No “ . But they did allow us to pluck it into a old computer that had no images and was so old it couldn’t hold batterie or even updates for long. To our parents relief it hadn’t had anything on it, at the time we thought it was a adventure and it would hold cool secrets so we were upset therefore any child could do this. If it's stuck in a wall, get a USB extension cable so that you don't have to move it.... and also a computer that you consider disposable, since even if you can reset the computer, some viruses could reside in more than just the hard drive.

That's wrong, no virus can escape the hard drive, that's where the OS is held. The only other part of your PC that can hold data is your ram, and no power can reset that. You just have to know how to hard reset the computer in question.

I volunteer at a Public Radio station in Sydney Australia. We use flash drives for everything. Mainly for music, pre-recorded commercials and programmes and interviews. There are always USB drives left in the computers and on the desks. I Found one on the stairs just inside the entrance. Thinking a presenter had dropped it I picked it up so I could possible return it to the owner. I told the station manager and was told to open the driver to identify the owner. That was a fatal error. With in 10 seconds of the computer detecting the USB, I virus was launched
. Firstly it sent a Keyboard disabling bug across the whole network in the station. As the 1st part of the virus became active a 2nd virus turned off all security software on every terminal. There was no way stopping it. Shutting down all our computers and rebooting did nothing it continued installing a 3rd virus. Buy this stage panic had turned the Station Manager catatonic, (he had a computer science degree and management). The 3rd virus worked really well. It took over our server deleting everything and deleting the hard drives of every terminal connected.
The 3 viruses were very simple. all were written on MS note pad. Converted by conversion software and triggered by simply entering the USB Drive into any terminal. Because the viruses were executed instantly the security software could not respond. Usually the security system you have will scan the USB before anything else but they don't expect a USB stick to be an executable programme. I hope they do now.

So they put confidential information on them and then have a database that anyone can access if they want to find out the locations of the drives? Seems like a quick and easy job for the FBI to find out what is on them that is "confidential"...or to just take them.

For the last one, does it apply to external hard drives found on websites such as wish? I got a 2 TB one for 50 bucks, & thankfully only used it for gaming. It worked for about a month, but now the games won't start, and the only thing it says is "the volume is dirty". Is this a scam, or a problem with my computer?

One thing you can do is have a second pc that has no personal info on it and use it for suspicious flash drives or stuff like that.

The real reason you shouldn't touch them is because sometimes people pack malware on them or fill them with substances that detonate when you plug them into anything.

Thanks for the help. I see them sticking out of walls all over the place, just pulled another one out of a wall now. I am seeing literally 10-20 a day. I was really concerned for my safety.

A new special type of scam that happened like 2 years ago is when a guy ask you to help pay for his gas because he is out of money. They use kids or infants to deceive you and when you feel bad you pay for it but they will use a device which will let them know you passwords and stuff and then start using your money for your own deeds without you realizing until you check your budget

Don't touch it with your MAIN computer. However, by all means plug-in with your auxiliary computer and see what's on it. They're usually innocent file repositories that have pictures of cats, just like the Internet, or they're pirate information spots, which are important for the revolution.
If they do encrypt the drive you're plugging-in with, you won't lose anything if it's your auxiliary drive. If they do such a thing, you know right away, and can smash it. If they're pirate repositories, HELP THE PIRATES.
