Walking Into Clarksdale

When I was born I was running
As my feet hit the ground
Before I could walk I was humming
An old railroad sound
Things didn't get much better
When by the age of five
They found me walking into Clarksdale
Trying to keep my friends alive

No time for celebration
There was no known cure
Seems I was born and raised
In the wrong killing floor
And my loved ones gathered round see
If the experiment had worked
I was misplaced, out of time
privileged and worse

Oh, mama please
Don't cry for me
Tears to the river
Tears to be free

Now I see twelve white horses
Walking in a line
Moving east across the metal
Bridge on highway 49
And standing in the shadows
Of a burnt out motel
The king of Commerce Mississippi waited
With his hound from hell, oh

A shiny noon riverboat taking
Income from the poor
It's floating by the levee in
an artificial pool
There's a six mile tailback
Back on junction 304
A stranger at the crossroads
Believe I've seen his face before

Oh,
Don't cry for me
Tears fill the river
Tears to be free

Oh, I'm sad to be leaving
The sun is going down and I really got to go now
I'm sad to be leaving
The sun's going down and I really got to go now
Really got to go now
I gotta go
I've got to move
I've got to move, yeah, ah

I'm sad to be leaving
Sun's going down and I really got to go now
I'm sad to be leaving
The sun's going down and I really got to go now, oh

I'm sad to be leaving
Sun's going down and I really got to go now
I'm sad to be leaving
The sun's going down and I really got to go now

Really got to go now, yeah
Oh, gotta go now, yes

Yes, gotta go now
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Walking into Clarksdale" by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant tells a story of a person's upbringing and struggles in life. The singer of the story was born with a sense of urgency, always feeling like he needed to keep moving forward. He was humming an old railroad sound before he could even walk. However, things did not get much better as he got older. At the age of five, they found him walking into Clarksdale, trying to keep his friends alive. The second verse of the song talks about the different scenes the singer sees as he's walking through life, observing and reflecting on different settings. The twelve white horses moving east across the metal bridge on highway 49 indicate a sense of movement and progress. The burnt-out motel and the king of Commerce Mississippi waiting with his hound from hell exhibit a sense of desolation and despair. The riverboat taking income from the poor represents the idea of privilege and inequality. Lastly, the stranger at the crossroads shows the idea of being at a critical point in life and making important decisions.

The repetition of "Don't cry for me, tears fill the river, tears to be free" at the end of each verse highlights the sense of sadness, loss, and struggle in the singer's life. The song ends with a repeated sense of urgency and need to move on.

"Walking Into Clarksdale"

When I was born I was running
As my feet hit the ground
Before I could talk I was humming
An old railroad sound
Things didn't get much better
When by the age of five
They found me walking into Clarksdale
Trying to keep my friends alive
No time for celebration
Now there's no known cure
Seeing I was born and raised
On the wrong killing floor
And my loved ones gathered round
To see if the experiment had worked
I was misplaced out of time
Never rich – never worse

Oh momma, please don't cry for me
Tears to the river – tears to be free
And I see twelve white horses walking in line
Moving east across that river bridge
On highway forty-nine
And standing in the shadows of a burnt out motel
The King of Commerce Mississippi waited with his hound from hell
A shiny neon riverboat taking income from the poor
It's floating by the levee in an artificial pool
There's a six-mile tailback back out on junction 304
A stranger at the crossroads
I believe I'd seen his face before
Oh, don't cry for me
Tears fill the river – tears to be free
I'm sad to be leaving
The sun's gone down and I've really got to go now
Sad to be leaving
The sun's gone down – I've really got to go now
Yeah, really got to go now
I've got to go – I've got to move
Sad to be leaving
Sun's gone down – I've really got to go now
Sad to be leaving
The sun's gone down and I've really got to go now
Yeah, really got to go now

Just gave this yet another listen. It’s one of my all time favorites and I visit often. This evening I was struck by what a percussion driven record this is. Will Lee really shines bright and powerful. Sorry he is gone.

@Rubin4749

Very underrated album, glad I got to see them on both tours.

@paulfigg4048

Page played 2 different types of guitar solos on this. . The Yardbirds. Then Zeppelin. Love this song! Album was Amazing. 1998. There was nothing like this at that time. 💜🤘🍺

@Videoparuser

Great tour, too! Mostly led live! Nashville

@tomslick2058

Little bit of Jean Jeanie.. page does not solo much on this album, more so on this song. More crunchy rythems. Good album. To bad they kept Whiskey in a glass and the Door off the album.
