I'm walking out the door
My head's doing summer salt
I don't know if I'm clean
Run
I'm jumping off the fence
I'm half way to pay the rent
Cole man makes the hole
Sleeping citizens
Coming like the door
It's how you play the game
Cross
It's easy when you run
It's always when you're fun
Have the day past gone by
Cole man makes a hole
Sleeping citizens
Cole man lock the door
It's how you play
Now when I see my own reflection
Run in doubt of the subwork
It's nothing first to then the sun can take
Cole man makes a home
It does
Sleeping citizens
Cole man lock the door
It's how you play the game
The song "Sleeping Citizens" by Paloalto has a mysterious and elusive quality to it. The lyrics suggest a sense of confusion and uncertainty, with the singer unsure about the state of their own being, as well as their ability to cope with the challenges of life. The opening lines "I'm walking out the door, my head's doing somersaults, I don't know if I'm clean," suggest a state of disorientation and anxiety. The use of the metaphor of somersaults is especially effective in conveying the sense of unease and confusion.
As the song progresses, we get a sense of the struggle the singer faces in trying to keep up with the demands of life. Lines such as "I'm half way to pay the rent, I can't make it out here," highlight the financial pressures many people experience in modern society. Additionally, the repeated reference to "Cole man" (which could be interpreted as either "cold man" or "coal man") suggests a cold and unforgiving world that is difficult to navigate.
Despite the pessimistic tone of the lyrics, there is a sense of resilience and determination that shines through in the chorus. "Sleeping citizens, coming like the door, it's how you play the game," suggests that despite the difficulties faced by the singer, they are still willing to face the challenges of life head-on. Overall, "Sleeping Citizens" is a powerful meditation on the difficulties faced by many people in modern society, and the resilience required to overcome them.
