Paloma del Cerro
Ya me estoy enloqueciendo
Por mi forma posesiva de amarte
Se supone que esto es el amor
Ay! que dolor desgarrador
Entonces pongo mis ojos en tu sombra
Y quedo amarrada a tu forma, y no puedo ser yo
Amarte o amarrarte, amor amarrete
Amarte o amarrarte, amor amarrete
Tu ausencia me muestra todas mis carencias
Dominación, celos, miedos, si te vas yo me muero
No quiero más este reflejo
Siempre viéndome en los mismos espejos
Lo siento cariñito mío,
Así me enseñó la telenovela a amarte
Amarte o amarrarte, amor amarrete
Soltarte o enjaularte, amor amarrete
Amor amarrete es lo que me han enseñado
Amor amarrete es la que me has enseñado
The song “Amor Amarrete” by Paloma del Cerro tells the story of a possessive love that borders on obsession. The lyrics suggest that the singer’s love for her partner is consuming her, making her feel trapped and unable to be true to herself. The first verse is told from the perspective of someone who is aware of their possessive tendencies and struggling to let go of their need to control their partner. They describe the pain of realizing that their love is not healthy, but don't know how to break away from it.
The chorus makes use of wordplay to highlight the singer’s internal conflict. The Spanish words “amarte” (to love you) and “amarrarte” (to tie you up) sound similar, and the song plays with the ambiguity of those meanings. The singer is torn between wanting to love their partner freely and wanting to possess them completely. They both long to be together forever and fear that their partner will leave them, creating a toxic cycle of dependence and fear.
The second verse is more introspective, as the singer reflects on how their insecurities and fears are amplified by their partner’s absence. They recognize the negative aspects of their behavior, such as jealousy and control, but feel powerless to change them. In the final lines, the singer blames their idea of love on telenovelas, revealing a common theme in Latin American pop culture: romanticizing unhealthy behaviors.
Overall, “Amor Amarrete” is a poignant and honest take on possessive love, its repercussions, and its roots in cultural norms. It’s a reminder that love should not be about domination or control, but rather about mutual respect and trust.
