Come Thou Fount
Passion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

And teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
I'll praise the Mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I come
Oh, and I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Oh Jesus, sought me when a stranger
Wondering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

So to grace, how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
And let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Overall Meaning

The hymn "Come Thou Fount" is a powerful expression of the gratitude of a believer to God for his grace, mercy and salvation. In the first verse, the songwriter calls for God to “tune” his heart to sing his grace. He acknowledges that God is the source of every blessing and that the streams of mercy from God never cease, calling for songs of praise. The second verse emphasizes the need to learn from the angels who praise God in heaven with “flaming tongues” and the importance of being fixed on the Mount of God's redeeming love. The third verse reflects on how God has helped the writer in the past, and the hope that he will “arrive home” safely with God.

In the fourth verse, the writer recounts how he was lost and wandering away from God, but Jesus sought him and by His grace, saves him from danger. The fifth verse is an acknowledgment of the debt the writer owes to God’s grace, and the constraint to be daily mindful of it. The final verse is a plea for God to seal his heart and keep him from wandering away from Him. Overall, the hymn is a declaration of the writer's love and devotion to God, despite their shortcomings.
