Strange
Patsy Cline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Strange, how you stopped loving me
How you stopped needing me
When she came along
Oh, how strange

Strange, you changed like night and day
Just upped and walked away
When she came along
Oh, how strange

Well, I guess that I was just your puppet
You held on a string
To think I thought you really loved me
But look what thoughts can bring

Strange, you're still in all my dreams
Oh what a funny thing
I still care for you
Oh, how strange

Well, I guess that I was just your puppet
You held on a string
To think I thought you really loved me
But look what thoughts can bring, oh oh oh

Strange, you're still in all my dreams
Oh what a funny thing
I still care for you
Oh, how strange

How strange, how strange, how strange

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Patsy Cline's song "Strange" are about a person reflecting on how their former partner stopped loving and needing them when they met someone else. The song's pace is slow and mournful, with Cline's emotive voice adding to the melancholic feeling of the lyrics. The song describes how the singer feels like they were just a puppet on a string to their partner, unable to prevent them from leaving. Despite how their partner has treated them, the singer still finds themselves caring for them and dreaming about them.

The use of the word "strange" in the song's title and throughout the lyrics emphasizes how unexpected and irrational the singer's former partner's behavior seems to them. They can't understand how their partner stopped loving them so easily, and the way their partner has completely changed since meeting someone else only adds to the sense of incomprehension. The song reflects on how the singer's partner's fickle behavior has affected them, and how they are still struggling to come to terms with it.

Overall, "Strange" is a song about heartbreak and confusion, with powerful lyrics that capture the emotional turmoil of a relationship falling apart. Although it was released over 50 years ago, the song's themes are still relevant today, and its enduring popularity is a testament to its emotional power.

This woman has a voice that booms into the hollows of your body and soul, I simply cannot listen to it without feeling the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

The thing that's awesome about Patsy Cline is that she has full control of her voice and she does a BEAUTIFUL job with her voice

I love patsy cline. I was born in 1962 my mother would sing around the house and on occasions on stage and in theater. she sounds so much like Patsy that if I listen to Patsy’s records and close my eyes I see my mothers face. Now with my Dad gone I realize what a gift that is, because when her day comes and I’m missing her I’ll know I can close my eyes, listen to Patsy and see mom. Just wish I could see my dad so easily now.

when someone sings, and they make the hairs on your arm stand up, there are just no words to describe that feeling. Your simply witnessing a miraculous event.
