I Have A Dream
Patti Page Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have I told you lately that I love you
Could I tell you once again somehow
Have I told with all my heart and soul how I adore you
Well darlin' I'm telling you now

My world would end today if I should lose you
I'm no good without you, anyhow
This heart would break in two if you refuse me
Well darlin' I'm telling you now

Have I told you lately how I miss you
When the stars are shining in the sky
Have I told you why the nights are long
When you're not with me
Well darlin' I'm telling you now

My world would end today if I should lose you
I'm just no good without you, anyhow

This heart would break in two if you refuse me
My darlin', I'm telling you now

Overall Meaning

In "You Are the One," Patti Page sings about how important her love is to her, and how she cannot imagine living without it. The lyrics begin by questioning whether or not she has told her love how much she means to her lately, and then immediately responds by declaring her love once again. The song then continues by emphasizing how much of an impact her love has on her life, and how she cannot function without it. The chorus repeats the sentiment that her world would end without her love, and that her heart would break in two if her love refused her.

The repetition of the lyrics in the song emphasizes the depth of the singer's feelings, and the urgency of her desire to express her love. The use of phrases such as "My world would end today if I should lose you," and "This heart would break in two if you refuse me" make it clear that the singer feels that her love is essential to her daily functioning, and that she cannot live without it. There is a melancholic tone to the song that emphasizes this intense emotional state, expressing that without her love, everything will seem dark and lonely.

Interestingly, "You Are the One" was originally released in 1949 as a B-side, but its popularity grew and it became a hit in its own right. The song has since been covered by many artists, including Johnny Mathis, Connie Francis, and Frank Sinatra. The song was also featured in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket.
