Peace
Paul Kelly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have come from so far away
Down the road of my own mistakes
In the hope you could hear me pray
Oh Lord, keep me in your reach

How I longed through these wasted years
To outrun all the pain and fear
Turned to stone from my un-cried tears
And now it's Your grace I seek

Love won't compromise
It's a gift, it's a sacrifice
My soul renewed and my heart released
In You I'll find my peace

Wondrous child of whom the angels sing
Know my joy, feel my suffering
Shining star make this love you bring
So bright that I may believe

That my way will not be lost
From now on til that river's crossed
My soul renewed and my spririt free

In you I'll find my peace
In You I'll find my peace

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paul Kelly's song Peace are about finding solace and redemption in a higher power. The singer has come a long way from their past mistakes and seeks to be heard and kept in God's grace. The years they've spent running from their pain and fear have left them turned to stone, but they believe that God's love is a gift and a sacrifice that can renew their soul and release their heart. The singer acknowledges the joy and suffering that comes with being human, and asks that the shining star of God's love be so bright that they can believe they will not lose their way. The promise of finding peace in God's love is what sustains them on their journey.

The opening lines of the song establish the singer's sense of distance and separation from God, as they have come "from so far away" and hope that God can still hear them. The idea of being kept within God's reach suggests a desire for protection and guidance. The repetition of the phrase "my soul renewed" highlights the transformative power of God's love, which can wash away the singer's pain and tears. The line "Love won't compromise" implies that God's love is unwavering and unconditional, requiring no negotiation or bargaining.

The song's chorus is a declaration of faith, with the singer stating that they will find their peace in God. The use of the word "wondrous" to describe the child of whom the angels sing implies awe and reverence, suggesting that God's love is something extraordinary and magical. The final lines of the song express the singer's confidence that they will not lose their way as long as they have God's love to guide them.

Overall, Peace is a heartfelt expression of faith and a desire to connect with a higher power in order to find peace and redemption.

A true classic.

oh herro

i always listen to this and the speech. ever since leaving university, you get the shock of your life i think. sooner or later you realise youre not 16 anymore, you see your parents getting older, you have to work your hands to hte bone to pay the bills and the days and weeks go by so fast, before you know it your hitting 30. i know a lot of people like that, i think thats why this song and the speech resonates so much

You're Right

oh herro That is so true. It seemed to take forever to graduate high school. I didn’t know it at the time, but as soon as I stepped off that stage with my diploma. The carefree life I had been living was over. Life got real and days blurred into months, months into years. Next thing you know you hear that your high schools 20 year reunion is coming up in a few months. Then classmates start dying and it’s not drunk driving or ODs like it had always been before. It’s cancer, heart disease all the things that happened to old people.

I remember being 18 yo and thinking I have all the time in the world and this phase will stay forever. I remember having this mentality of I can achieve anything in life.
But here I am almost reaching 30, been working on a dream for a decade, and almost burnt out now. Already lost my dad, dog and mom's getting old. Whenever I feel down, all the insecurities and anxiety kicking the inside of my head, I always crawl back to this song and somehow everything feels alright for a little while.

@Abhijeet Kumar
It’s better to burn out trying than to fade away!
Best of luck on your journey
