On Your Side
Penguin Prison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The cold drove us inside
Look inside of your mind
It's been preoccupied
Didn't know you're lonely
That you're dissatisfied
You just run and hide
Thinking of things to say
Just to keep you with me
But you're just not the same
Making me uneasy
If you don't wanna stay
We'll go our separate ways
It's not easy being tongue-tied
Seeing with my eyes wide
cnd I can never decide
I just wanna be on your side
I just wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, I just wanna be
So much opposition
Wish that I could know
How to make you listen
Instead of blowing smoke
There are so many reasons
They're just not enough
If we never grow
It's not easy being tongue-tied
Seeing with my eyes wide
cnd I can never decide
I just wanna be on your side
I just wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, wanna be on your side
Wanna be, I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
Wanna be on your side
Wanna be, be
I just wanna be on your side
The lyrics of Penguin Prison's song "On Your Side" convey a sense of longing for connection and a deep desire to be understood and accepted by someone else. The first verse sets the scene with the singer wading in a low tide, seeking refuge from the cold. It's clear that the person they are addressing has been preoccupied and lonely, and the singer feels unsure about their feelings and motivations. The line, "You just run and hide," suggests that the person they are addressing tends to retreat rather than confront their emotions.
The next verse reveals the singer's efforts to maintain the connection with this person, yet they express unease because they sense that things have changed. The line, "If you don't wanna stay, we'll go our separate ways," reflects the singer's willingness to accept that the relationship may not be sustainable if the other person no longer wants to be a part of it.
The chorus captures the singer's struggle to express their emotions and make themselves heard. They feel tongue-tied and unable to fully articulate how they feel, which creates a sense of frustration and longing. The repetition of "I just wanna be on your side" emphasizes the underlying desire for acceptance and intimacy.
The bridge highlights the opposition and obstacles they face in trying to connect with this person. They express the wish to know how to make the other person truly listen and understand, rather than just dismissing their concerns. However, the singer acknowledges that despite having valid reasons to stay in the relationship, it may not be enough to overcome the challenges they face.
Throughout the song, the repetition of the chorus underscores the singer's consistent desire to be on the other person's side, to bridge the gap and find common ground. It showcases their unwavering commitment to the relationship and their longing for acceptance and understanding. The repetition of "Wanna be on your side" in the outro echoes this sentiment and further emphasizes the core theme of the song.
