Dying
Pennywise Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hate breeds hate that's what they say
Ignore the noise and find a better way
But indecision clouds your mind
As the reason linger deep inside
Penance for a single day
To sit and rot or come out winning
Salutations fight to be
On the boundary lines
Of the world we live in
War, in the eyes
Deplore, masterminds
Restore, all the presence
Of the world we live in
Shine, through the sirens
Despite, thieving tyrants
Insight, roads to Highlands
In the world we live in
Terminate their right to be
Polarized lies of the fascist sleaze
Lining up the shadowed gaze
Beheaded for a shallow grave
Whoring in complacency
The gilded cries can't make you see
Landing on your dying breath
Your ignorance intact till death

Dying in the world
In the world we live in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Pennywise's song "Dying" delve into themes of hate, indecision, and fascism. The first stanza condemns the idea that hate begets hate and instead advises the audience to ignore the negative rhetoric and strive for a better way. However, the singer acknowledges that indecision can cloud one's judgment and prevent them from finding a solution. They suggest that committing to a course of action, whether it leads to success or failure, is better than sitting idly by and letting the world move on around them.

The chorus touches on the idea of war and the presence of tyrannical leaders in the world. The song urges listeners to shine through the sirens (perhaps suggesting the noise of propaganda and biased media) and reject the thieving tyrants. The mention of the roads to Highlands could be interpreted as a metaphor for finding a higher path or a better future.

The final verse confronts fascist ideologies head-on, decrying their polarized lies and the shallow graves of those who fall victim to their tactics. The verse suggests that those who are complicit in this rise to power may be blinded by their own luxury and privilege, willfully ignoring the suffering of others. The song ends on the solemn note that those who perpetuate these negative beliefs and actions and refuse to change will ultimately find themselves dying in the world we live in.

For those who don’t understand Pennywise’s weakness to being bullied is that he is a supernatural being that feeds upon peoples fears to sustain himself, once his victims conquer their fear of him he loses his power. His favorite targets were children because they are easy to make fear him.
