Here's the mab who is gonna tell you why
I just got back from a lovely trip along the milky way
I stopped off at the North Pole to spend the holiday
I called on old, dear Santa Claus to see what I could see
He took me to his workshop and told his plans to me
You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list, and checkin' it twice
Gonna find out whose naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees when you are sleeping
Knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
Oh, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry
You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is coming to town
And curly head dolls that toddle and coo
Elephants, boats, and kiddie cars too
Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa is coming, coming to town
Then kids in Girl and Boy land will have a jubilee
They're gonna build a toyland all around the Christmas tree
So you better watch out, you better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
The big jolly man in the bright red suit
With his sleigh all full of loot
Santa Claus is coming to town
The first verse of Perry Como’s song, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, sets the tone for the rest of the song: “You better watch out, you better not cry. Here’s the man who is gonna tell you why.” The singer of the song has just returned from a trip to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus, who has shared his plans for Christmas with him. The chorus repeats the message of the lyrics, warning listeners that Santa is coming to town and will know who has been naughty or nice. He’ll make a list of everyone, and twice check it, find out who’s been good or bad, so that everyone will get just what they deserve when it comes to Christmas Day.
Throughout the song, Santa is depicted as a watchful and omniscient figure who knows everything about everyone, even when they are sleeping. The verses describe the toys that Santa will bring to the children, such as tin horns and toy drums, along with curly head dolls, elephants, boats, and kiddie cars, creating a sense of anticipation and wonder about the magical world that Santa inhabits. The final verse of the song suggests that Santa’s arrival will lead to a “jubilee” for children everywhere, with toyland being built around the Christmas tree.
