The Lord's Prayer
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts,
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory, forever!
Amen
The lyrics to Perry Como's "The Lord's Prayer" is a musical rendition of the prayer originally spoken by Jesus Christ in the Bible. The opening line, "Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name," is a recognition of God's holiness and greatness. The next two lines, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven," is a plea for God's power and authority to be established on earth just as it is in heaven. The following lines, "Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors," are appeals for God's provision and forgiveness, and an acknowledgement of our responsibility to forgive those who have hurt us.
The last two lines, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever! Amen," express the believer's trust in God's ability to keep them away from evil and to ultimately reign over all creation. The overall message of the song is a reminder of the believer's dependence on God and their obligation to live in a way that honors Him.
