For the Girl Behind the Counter
Peter La Grand Lyrics

Take my pulse, my mind, my spirit -
Whatever you think you could use
I would give them if it would set you free
I know it ain't easy living with these scars
I know you're just trying to hide from the dark
You don't have it together so stop lying please
I know when you haven't eaten I can tell when you are weak
You tremble all the time and you flinch when I am near
I'm not going to hit you so you can rest that fear
I know it ain't easy living with these scars
I know you're just trying to hide from the dark
I don't know if you'll ever lose your wounds
And the marks tell a story nobody would chose
The black dogs are going to find you anywhere you run
It's always the same thing they want and you survived them once
I know it ain't easy living with these scars
I know you're just trying to hide from the dark
But maybe we're all just falling apart
These lyrics, from Peter La Grand's song For the Girl Behind the Counter, speak to the struggles of someone who has been through difficult experiences and is trying to cope with the scars left behind. The singer acknowledges the pain the person behind the counter is going through and offers themselves up as support, saying they would give anything to help this person live even for a day without their memories weighing them down. The singer recognizes that this person is not okay and tries to reassure them that they don't have to pretend like they are.
The lyrics also touch on the fear and trauma that comes with being in an abusive relationship. The person behind the counter is constantly on edge, flinching at any sudden movements, even if it's just the singer approaching them. The reference to the "black dogs" adds to the sense of foreboding danger and the idea that this person is constantly being hunted.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of empathy and a desire to help someone who is struggling with deep wounds. The singer recognizes that the healing process is not easy and that it's okay to not be okay. The song offers a message of hope, however faint, that maybe we are all just falling apart, and that's okay too.
