C'est Ma Chanson
Petula Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Petula Clark's song C'est Ma Chanson describe the beauty of nature, even in the midst of winter's harshness. The refrain, which translates to "Winter, wind, rain sing their melody, fog or sun to my eyes, it's all the same. Don't search for why, everything is so beautiful to me. Why this grey country takes on an Italian appearance, and I imagine myself happy in the night, that a thousand mandolins play for my reverie," reflects the theme of finding joy in life, even in the face of adversity. The singer finds joy in the simple things of life, like the music of nature.
The verses continue with the theme of love and how it is expressed throughout the earth. The singer reflects that "everything, every inch of land, composed this song for you. The bird and the river had sung it long before me. They are words of every day, yet they are words of love. Love is my song, four seasons will sing it for you." These lyrics convey a sense of universal love and how it's present in all things around us, from the natural world to the mundane.
Overall, this song speaks to finding beauty in life, even in the difficult moments, and recognizing the power of love in all its forms.

L'hiver, le vent, la pluie
Chantent leur mélodie
The winter, the wind, the rain
Are singing their melody
La brume ou le soleil
A mes yeux, c'est pareil
The fog or the sun
To my eyes, it's the same
Ne cherchez pas pourquoi
Tout est si beau pour moi
Don't ask why
Everything is so beautiful to me
Pourquoi ce gris pays
Prend des airs d'Italie
Why this gray country
Takes on an Italian look
Et moi, je m'imagine
Heureuse dans la nuit
And I imagine myself
Happy in the night
Que mille mandolines
Jouent pour ma rêverie.
That a thousand mandolins
Play for my dream
Tout, toute la terre
A composé cette chanson pour toi
Everything, the whole world
Has composed this song for you
L'oiseau et la rivière
L'avait chantée bien avant moi
The bird and the river
Had sung it long before me
Ce sont des mots de tous les jours
Pourtant ce sont des mots d'amour
These are everyday words
Yet they are words of love
L'amour, c'est ma chanson
Quatre saisons la chanteront pour toi.
Love is my song
Four seasons will sing it for you.

The dress. The Finnian's Rainbow-esque hair ribbon. Such charm & style. And she sings pretty good too.

Originally broadcast May 21, 1967 from the Montreal Expo, I believe. I think the date listed in the description was a summer re-run broadcast as the season had ended by then. "This is My Song" was written by Charles Chaplin, and is one of the most beautiful songs ever composed. Also listen to the version by Harry Secombe if you haven't heard it. Both he and Petula had a major hit with the song in the U.K., quite deservedly.

My first crush was Petula Clark, when I saw her sing "Downtown" on TV in 1964. I was 5 years old, and something about her captivated me like no one else before or since. Nearly 60 years later, I still have a crush on her.
