She started her professional career as a child performer and has had one of the longest careers of any British entertainer, spanning more than eight decades. Clark's professional career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio. In 1954 she charted with "The Little Shoemaker", the first of her big UK hits, and within two years she began recording in French. Her international successes have included "Prends mon cœur", "Sailor" (a UK number one), "Romeo", and "Chariot". Hits in German, Italian, and Spanish followed. In late 1964 Clark's success extended to the United States with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. These include her signature song "Downtown" (US number one), "I Know a Place", "My Love" (US number one), "A Sign of the Times", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love", "Who Am I", "Colour My World", "This Is My Song" (by Charlie Chaplin) (a UK number one), "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" and "Kiss Me Goodbye". Between January 1965 and April 1968 Clark charted with nine US Top 20 hits in the US, where she was sometimes called "the First Lady of the British Invasion".

Clark has sold more than 68 million records. She has also enjoyed success in the musical film Finian's Rainbow and in the stage musicals The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers, Sunset Boulevard, and Mary Poppins.

And once again as always Petula Clark shows every other artist just how to put a true classic song over to the listener.
It is no wonder what so ever that Birt himself said that Petula's version of this most beautiful song was his all time favourite.
Providing that not only could Birt write superb and brilliant songs but that he had absolutely impeccable taste.

There is a memory that this song had been listening in the song of Dionne Warwick before. At the CD of Sweet Melodies it was Petula Clark, so I was dissatisfied at first. However, while listening several times, I was totally captivated by the charm of that singing voice. This person, who must play the role of the wife of Professor Chips at the movie "Mr. Chips' Good-bye" played by P. O'Toole. There seems to have been some point of somewhere in the face. It is not due to that, but there was a bit of a sex appeal, and there was cleanliness not going to Coquetry, so it was a charming person.
Regardless, singing is truly amazing. A lovely girl's love that fell in love with a lovely boy is sung by a sweet and glossy smooth voice.
The song is exciting from My hands are shaking, the last phrase ends with if not I'll just die. Like the darkness of the stage. And one moment of silence. It is a feeling that a sad sadness accompanying love comes out of songs like silk. Expression power around here, that would be the fascination of Bacharach songs. Even so, it is truly lucky to meet with Mr. Chips' wife in this song.

曲はMy hands are shaking（私の手は震えてるわ）から盛り上がって、最後のフレーズはif not I'll just die(そうじゃなければ私きっと死んでしまうわ）で尽きる。舞台の暗転のように。そしてサイレント（沈黙）の一瞬間。胸がキューンとなってしまう。恋心にともなう、そこはかとない哀しみが、シルクのような歌をつむぎだしたって感じだ。このあたりの表現力、それがバカラックソングの魅力だろう。それにしてもこの歌で、チップス先生の奥さんにめぐり会えるなんて、ほんとにラッキー。

I'm going through this right now. I am heartbroken. I don't see this getting any better for me. I always end up breaking my own heart but at least this song is helping me feel not so alone. I do much prefer the Dusty Springfield version though but this one isn't bad at all! I'm in such an awful place in my life right now, I was absolutely head over heels for a man & I told him my true feelings & he let me down, very graciously though so I can respect that but I'm still so hurt, so very very hurt, I wanted him more than life itself. God help me.

This version THRILLS me, if for no other reason than it completely leaves the word "guy" out of the equation (was just listening to Dionne Warwick's version of "This Girl's in Love with You", and it's great . . . right up to the point she sings "say you're in love, and you'll be my guy...". }-X ) I get the point of wanting to keep the rhyme (with "die"), but in looking for songs I think would work great in f/f music videos, SUCH a buzzkill!

It's kind of weird in the late 60's and early 70's anybody would release a cover of your song. I guess if the cover did better than the original at least the song author can be comforted by more money.

This was a carryover from the standards of the 20s30s/40s/50s. IMO, that was a better way to do things. Instead of releasing original but mediocre new songs to fill out an album or a concert, make good versions/interpretations of standards/classics.
