Identical
Phoenix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't just know you
I've grown like that too
(Identical, identical)
(Identical, identical)
If I don't dislike you
I'm withdrawn, unrighteous too
(Identical, identical)
(Identical, identical)
I don't just know you
But a red rose lies, peonies too
(Identical, identical) a caress can hide the lassitude
(Identical, identical)
In the same room, on the same night
I found you caught in the headlights
(Identical, identical) hold up to show your gratitude
(Identical, identical)

Un-forget, un-washed away
Can't forgive what you were
No god forbid to persuade
All your sins are counterfeit
I'll follow my own mistrial
I heard the echo this time
So why not discuss this headline
Now we're sitting on the same side of this aisle
Reflections on the protocol and reciprocity
Hey father, mother, daughter, here's another varsity
Gazing 'round the corner of the university
Can't call it out, but keep calling you out loud

Tell me you're trying, trying to regret
Playing all night those videotapes
I'm no prophet, I'm your friend
Take my advice, make your mistakes
I'm right beside you
Unfold that I know you
I'm told that it's my fault
I'd rather fall and lose control again

(Identical, identical)
(Identical, identical)
(Identical, identical)
(Identical, identical)

I'm losing my friend, I'm losing my grip
Praying all night to radio waves

I'm no prophet, I'm your friend
Take my advice, make your mistakes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Phoenix's song Identical delve into the complexity of relationships and how individuals in a relationship can become almost too similar to each other. The opening lines, "I don't just know you, I've grown like that too" suggest a certain comfort in familiarity, but this comfort can also lead to a sense of sameness, where the individuals' personalities begin to blur together. The repetition of the word "identical" highlights this theme of similarity.

The second verse introduces a sense of conflict and resentment, with the lines "Un-forget, un-washed away, can't forgive what you were" suggesting that the singer may be holding onto some past hurt or grudge. However, the chorus serves as a call to action, encouraging both parties to take risks and make mistakes in order to keep their individuality and keep the relationship fresh.

Overall, the song seems to be a plea for a deeper, more honest connection between two people, while also acknowledging the challenges and pitfalls that come with being in a relationship.

I'm gonna cry it's so beautiful 🥺 reminds me of seeing them play "Love Like a Sunset" live so many years ago. The atmosphere and the bass pumping slowly through the crowd. Ughhh

@Ffejro12256

They played the instrumental version of this last Saturday at Alter Ego fest in Los Angeles. Last song of the night and Thomas Mars walked through the crowd hugging people. I am a 50 year old guy and I was crying. It was so effing beautiful.

Someone just uploaded the entire set. Watched it again yesterday and was crying

@colingallagher1711

Alpha Zulu doesn't even compare to old Phoneix, but this is arguably the best song on the album, and for a second, brings me back to the Phoenix I grew up on.
