“I wanted to approach song writing differently. Like a rapper, I wanted to use the beat as my point of departure and then continue by collaging different layers."
-Pien Feith
This shift in her approach to writing allowed the multifaceted singer to employ a wider range of influences in her music. Together with her partner and producer Melvin Wevers she wrote and recorded numerous demos over the course of two years. These tracks were then dissected, cut up, and augmented by drummer and percussionist Pim Verlaek.
Dance on Time is a beat-oriented record that flirts with dub, crunk, and tropicalia. The stream of enticing new songs that emerged daily from the crevices of the Internet have manifested themselves on this record. By working with studio engineer Remko Schouten, who has worked with Pavement and ZzZ, the band managed to translate the digital sketches into a more organic sound. The last addition to the band has been bass player Peter Akkerman, who completes the band’s live sound.
Pien describes the period during which she wrote the record as one “without a clear idea of the future, something I have gradually started to see less as a problem. This relief of tension guided my in approach music in a new found fashion. I try to look for growth instead of defining a clear start and end.”
Blind Dive
Pien Feith Lyrics

the water would rise
it's never one toe in the water
before stepping in
no, we just swim
we just swim
we just dive right in
we enter rooms not knowing whose or what
I improvise while pretending that I’m not
just blazing through the atmosphere
I bluffed my way through this whole year
It’s a blind dive into waters unfamiliar
It’s a blind dive into waters unfamiliar
The lyrics in "Blind Dive" by Pien Feith speak to the idea of taking risks without fully considering the consequences. The opening lines suggest that the singer and others failed to anticipate the full extent of the challenges they would face. They never checked how high the water would rise, indicating that they did not take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Instead of testing the waters gradually, they dove right in, suggesting a kind of reckless abandon.
The song then shifts to a broader metaphor of entering rooms without knowing what's inside. The singer improvises, pretending that they are not afraid, but ultimately they feel as though they are bluffing their way through life. The repeated refrain of "It’s a blind dive into waters unfamiliar" reinforces this theme of heading into the unknown with little preparation.
The overall message of the song seems to be a warning against recklessness and the dangers of taking unnecessary risks. While there is value in trying new things and exploring the unknown, it's important to do so with caution and careful planning.
