Higher
Pietasters Lyrics

Sick of it all, get away get away from you
The higher I go, the higher I want to stay
Away from reality and get away from you
The more that I want, the more that you take away
All that I'm trying to say is get away from me
The higher I get, the farther I fall
Sick of it all, get away get away from you
'Cuz I've been down before my friends and I'm not gonna fall
'Cuz I've been down before my friends and I'm not gonna fall back baby
I never seem to wonder why
You always want to see me cry
Always try to turn to the ones you love
I never seem to wonder why
You always want to see me cry
Always try to turn to the ones you love
'Cuz I've been down before my friends and I'm not gonna fall
'Cuz I've been down before my friends and I'm not gonna fall back baby
I'm so high, I can only take me higher
You can take me higher, I let you take me there
I'm so high, I can only take me higher
You can take me higher, I let you take me there
The lyrics of Pietasters' song Higher are a reflection of the emotions that one goes through when they are in a toxic relationship. The opening lines, "The higher I get, the farther I fall, Sick of it all, get away, get away from you" suggest that as the individual tries to seek escape from the pain caused by their partner, they fall harder when things go wrong. At times, the person may wonder why their partner always wants to see them cry and turn to their loved ones, yet they continually stay in the relationship.
As the song progresses, the chorus emphasizes that the writer has been down before, and they will not fall back to where they were before. The line, "I'm so high, I can only take me higher, You can take me higher, I let you take me there" suggests that it is only the individual who can choose to move on from a toxic relationship and strive for something better.
In essence, the song is about self-preservation and realizing that no one has the power to hold them back or make them fall, as long as they are willing to take control of their emotions and the direction of their life.

MathandMe: Thank you. The Pietasters are some of the nicest guys on the planet. A few years ago, they did a benefit show in DC to raise money for a scholarship my wife and I setup to honor our son by awarding a scholarship to a deserving musician graduating from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The show was packed with a line of people waiting to replace anyone who left. Most of the music they played was written by Todd. The crowd's response to my son's music was awesome. Keep encouraging your son. The world needs more talent to bring a little happiness. Gary

This was my favorite band in High School. I shared these guys with half of Dallas back in 98. You know a band is good when their live album sounds better then their studio album.

Gary Eckhardt his music lives on... My 8 year old sons LOVE the Pietasters and have taken up drums and trumpet so we can have a family band. We listen to the Pietasters daily. I remember seeing them with my uncle in NYC when I was 15 and here in Austin just a few years before he passed. I'm so sorry for your loss. As a parent, my heart goes out to you.

Sorry for your loss. I think a lot of us are blessed with the fact he was here long enough to create such fantastic compositions. Hoping it has gotten easier for you over the years. My condolences.

Mr. Eckhardt, Fingers Morgan and I were actually talking about Todd this past weekend. My life is definitely improved, and a bit more interesting for having known him, however briefly.
