Maniac
Pilot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ego Maniac lost in all your sympathy
Do you think you have what it takes to satisfy
Well I'm not one to say but I know when to bend the line
The only one who takes is the taker inside, you
Tell me what to do but you don't really understand
Preach and dance around the fire of oblivion
Tell yourself someday you will have it all
Figured out and then it comes around
So you'll erase the past to defend your ground
You lose anyhow
What's this all about you thinking that you know it all
And when you learn you take and own it like you knew it before
Well who the fuck are you and why am I still standing here
I guess I thought I knew but you owned that all away again
Tell me what to do but you don't really understand
Preach and dance around the fire of oblivion
Tell yourself someday you will have it all
Figured out and then it comes around
So you'll erase the past to defend your ground
So this is what your all about
So it's all on you and what you desire
All your people tell you lies to feed your fire
Yet it seems so clear that nothing is wrong
I remember listening to how he stroke you along
So disturbed, persuaded and left unhinged
All the bullshit that you take is enough to make me sick

Even further you proceed to give it to us
In twisted little bits that cover it up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Maniac" by Pilot speak to the concept of an ego maniac who is lost in their own self-centeredness and seeks validation from others. The singer acknowledges that this person may appear to have what it takes to satisfy others, but deep down they are only concerned with taking from others. The person in question may give advice and act superior, but they lack true understanding. They preach and dance around the fire of oblivion, believing that someday they will have it all figured out. However, in reality, they only defend their own ground by erasing the past.

The singer questions the authority of the ego maniac, wondering who they truly are. Despite thinking they knew them, the ego maniac has a way of owning everything and leaving the singer standing there, confused and defeated. The singer sees through the ego maniac's facade, understanding that they are driven by their own desires and are surrounded by people who feed their lies and fuel their self-centered fire. Despite the ego maniac's seemingly confident exterior, it becomes clear that there is something wrong, and the singer remembers how this person was manipulated by someone else. The singer expresses their disgust with the ego maniac's behavior and the twisted bits of deception they spread.

Overall, the lyrics portray a sense of frustration and disillusionment with a person who only cares about themselves and uses others for their own gain. The singer sees through the ego maniac's manipulative ways and expresses their disappointment and disbelief in their actions.

I loved this song and the lads did it proud. Have you heard it sung by Billy Lyall off his album Solo Casting?

nigelo92

Honestly dont know why, but I like Pilot more than today's bands... and it all began with a friend humming oh oh oh its magic, so I had to hear the real song because it was so catchy. From there on I just clicked on all the other pilot songs, waiting for pilotpotty to put on new ones :D

Pilot were great. They probably established my principles in the music I like - ok there were great sounding bands and singers around -and there still are, but I always give more respect to the band or artist that writes and plays their own stuff, even if I don't like it! Most don't. Pilot did - and set a standard for me (to like! - my musicianship is poor).

Have always loved this song...REALLY reminds me of the 70's (you are far too young Nigel)....I used to play this VERY loud and get lots of reaction from my parents to "turn that music down...."...fun memories...

Clown67

Truly great band.

brok328

But, the closer of this album is immense - find it yourself, you can never have 'too many hopes'. But don't stop there - onwards and upwards- a'body!

brok328

You have great taste Nigel. You appreciate musicianship - Listen and learn..

MERCEDES 7777

שיר נפלא ! יצירת מופת מדהימה !

David Paton was never remotely influenced by 10cc Vocals, Gazzy... ask him yourself. He set his own, leading standard, period. No offense, but other comments to you in "Trembling" off the great Morin Heights are to be held true. Otherwise, kudo's on your appreciation of this great album that could have sold a million copies.
