Steps
Pilot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Steps along the way
Steps along the way
Making up your day
Making up your day
Have you ever been down
Deep depressions confound me
Did you ever feel like falling from the top
Do you ever get high
Super human am I
Don't they say that happiness can make you cry
Repeat*
See the things that you've got
Think of those who have nothing
Don't they make you realise your luck is in
No one treats you too bad
No one makes you feel sad
Did you really need the things you might have had

Repeat*
Making up your day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pilot's song Steps remind us of how our everyday life is composed of consistent and continuous steps that shape our experience. The repetition of the phrase "Steps along the way" emphasizes the significance of small steps that lead to something big. The first verse of the song talks about the hardships and low times in life, where depression can cloud our judgment, and we can feel like giving up. It is a reminder that everyone at some point in their life has experienced these downfalls. The second verse shifts towards a positive note, talking about the importance of little things in life and how they have significant meaning in life. The lyrics urge listeners to think about people who have nothing to be grateful for what they have.

Furthermore, the lyrics of the chorus "Making up your day, Making up your day," reveal how the song focuses on summarizing the details of a day that composed of several actions or steps. It encourages us to reflect on the small steps we take every day, which add up and make a significant difference. The bridge talks about the importance of gratitude and how no one should make us feel sad because we should appreciate the small things in life, as the fulfillment of the little things can be just enough to satisfy us.

I bought this great album back in 1976. I still play it now. I don't think my sons understand why I play it. Obviously not their style, no rapping, no swearing etc.

Love this song (and others) on Morin Heights. Best album overall, though best hits are on the first two. Thanks for posting.

Great song from a top band

Summertime Blooz

The verse reminds me of Toto's 'Africa'. This is a good album. This was produced by Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker and you can hear it.

I don't like 'pilot' much at all. Too poppy and the vocals are high and shrill. I checked them out as there are clear links to the Alan Parsons Project, whom I adore. I must say though, this song, 'running water' and 'lovely lady smile' are excellent.
