They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

Service
Lip service
Whispering
A discourse of love
Service
Spreading through
The mouth
A sweet smell
Making me numb
To tell the truth
I don't need you to love me
Just a little service
The real thing is
Just so boring
Some service with you
Together until morning
Service
Around the mouth
Whispering
Sweet and
Sticky words
Honestly, it's alright
Even if you don't love me
Just a little service
The real thing is
Just so boring
Some service with you
For a while, until morning
Words are
Just words
Just service
Honestly, it's alright
Even if you don't love me
Just a little service
The real thing is
Just so boring
Some service with you
Together until morning
Honestly, it's alright
Even if you don't love me
Just a little service
The real thing is
Just so boring
Some service with you
Together until morning
Let's do it again
The lyrics of Pizzicato Five's "Lip Service" seem to be about a service or a "game" where the two people involved don't actually need to love each other - just offer up lip service. The song begins with a description of "saabisu" (service in Japanese) being whispered into the lips and being spread through the mouth as a sweet smell. It makes one feel numb as if they are falling in love. The singer then continues, saying that they don't need the other person to love them, just enjoy the service with them until the morning. The real thing is "just so boring", insinuating that they are only craving the lip service or service game with this person.
In the second verse, they continue to describe the service with words being sticky and the need for just a little service to make it through the night. The chorus repeats the same message - no love needed, just a little service until the morning. In the end, they repeat the same lines again, showing that it's a cycle where they can just repeat the same lip service with no emotions attached.
Overall, it seems like the singer may be craving attention or a game to play without actually wanting to be in love or commit to anything long-term. The lyrics also suggest that they are okay with living in the moment, enjoying the service until the morning with no strings attached.
