They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

Hora waratte okure yo
Boku mo te wo furu yo
Utatte goran yo

On the satellite tv broadcast
A girl from some city
Is smiling
--very happy!
On the midnight satellite broadcast
The king of some country
Is shot
--I can't believe it!
By any chance
Can you see me too?
If you are
Watching me
Smile for me
I'm waving my hand
Try singing
With simultaneous translation
Good morning, good day
What you are, what you like
Goodbye, thank you, sakitsumi
What you are, what you like
Ahaha
On the afternoon satellite broadcast
A flag is erected on
Some distant star
--I can't believe it!
By any chance
Can you see me too?
If you are
Watching me
Smile for me
I'm waving my hand
You look tired
I'm the same
I'm so happy
That we met
Love is here
With simultaneous translation
Good morning, good day
What you are, what you like
Goodbye, thank you, sakitsumi
What you are, what you like
Ahaha
The song "Satellite Hour" by Pizzicato Five is a reflection of the artist's fascination with the power of satellite television. The lyrics describe the various scenes that are being broadcast on satellite TV, including a smiling girl from some city, the assassination of a king of some country, and a flag being erected on some distant star. The artist expresses disbelief and confusion at the different scenes, illustrating how the vastness of satellite TV and its ability to bring real-time happenings from different parts of the world can be overwhelming.
The second half of the song brings a personal touch, as Pizzicato Five wonders whether the viewer can see them too through the television. The artist requests that if the viewer can see them, then they should smile and wave back. The lyrics then delve into the universal feeling of tiredness and a sense of happiness from meeting someone new. Pizzicato Five concludes by suggesting that love has come too, and that it is all possible because of satellite TV and the simultaneous translation that makes the connection between people from different parts of the world possible.
