Gather at the River
Point of Grace Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sometimes we don't see eye to eye
We don't agree, we don't know why
But jesus prayed that we'd be one
So for the sake of god's own son
Can we put away our differences
Lay down our pride
(chorus)
Shall we gather at the river of forgiveness
Come together at the waters of love
Flowing like a fountain from the mercy giver
Shall we gather at the river
We have all made enemies of
The ones we're called by christ to love
But there's redemption at the riverside
The water's deep, the water's wide
It can wash away our bitterness
The current is strong
I think we've been out in the desert too long
(repeat chorus)
We can wade into the middle
Where the healing waters flow
It only takes a little
To heal a wounded soul
It will only bring us closer
Than we've ever been before
This is just what jesus was praying for
The lyrics of "Gather At The River" by Point Of Grace are a call for Christian unity and forgiveness. The song acknowledges the unavoidable conflicts between people, even within the church, but also highlights that Jesus prayed for his followers to be one. The lyrics challenge Christians to put aside their differences and pride in order to come together in a metaphorical river of forgiveness and love. The river serves as a symbol of the redemptive power of Christ's love, which can wash away bitterness and bring people closer to each other.
The first verse acknowledges that sometimes we all come into situations where we don't see eye to eye and have disagreements. However, as Christians, believers are urged to put aside their differences and unite for the sake of God's own son. The chorus then repeats the call to gather together at the river, an image that is repeated throughout the song. The second verse emphasizes the importance of Christ's call to love one another, even when it is difficult, and that although we may have made enemies of those we are called to love, redemption is available at the riverside. The final chorus encourages believers to take the risk and wade into the middle of the river, where the healing waters flow, because it will bring them closer to each other and closer to God's plan for unity.
Overall, "Gather At The River" is a deeply spiritual song that emphasizes the importance of forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity, even in the midst of conflict. The song offers a hopeful, redemptive message that all can receive healing at the riverside if they are willing to humbly come together in love and unity.
