The Great Divide
Point of Grace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words and music by grant cunningham & matt huesmann
Silence
Trying to fathom the distance
Looking out 'cross the canyon carved
By my hands
God is gracious
Sin would still separate us
Were it not for the bridge his grace
Has made us
His love will carry me

[Chorus]
There's a bridge to cross the great divide
A way was made to reach the other side
The mercy of the father, cost his son
His life
His love is deep, his love is wide
There's a cross to bridge the great divide

God is faithful
On my own i'm unable
He found me hopeless, alone and
Sent a savior
He's provided a path a promised
To guide us
Safely past all the sin that would divide us
His love delivers me

[Chorus]

The cross that cost my lord his life
Has given me mine

There's a bridge to cross the great divide
There's a cross to bridge the great divide

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The Great Divide by Point Of Grace is a song about the bridge that God's grace has made to cross the divide between humanity and sin. The song starts with the idea of a silence that is trying to comprehend the distance created by our own hands. The distance is a metaphor for the separation between God and humanity caused by sin. The song acknowledges that God's love is the only force that can carry us across the great divide.

The chorus revolves around the idea that there is a bridge and a way has been made to reach the other side. The mercy of the father costs the life of his son, Jesus Christ. This sacrifice is the bridge that can cross the great divide. The song acknowledges that God is faithful and without him, humans are unable to reach the other side. He provides a path to guide them safely past all the sin that would divide us. Thus, the love of God delivers us and saves us from being hopeless and alone.

Overall, the song offers a message of hope and redemption. It emphasizes that God's love is deep and wide, and that he's always with us, even when we don't realize it. The song emphasizes the power of grace and sacrifice and emphasizes the hope that it brings.

+Paul Cunningham Paul, I am soooo very sorry you lost your son in 2002. I lost my marriage just before that time and my brother in 2008, and one of the most touching memories of my life is going to a Christian concert in Tulare or Visalia California in the summer of 2001 and hearing Point of Grace for the first time singing You Will Never Walk Alone and Blue Skies among many others. But those two broke me.

What touched me about you and your son's song was the phrase, "You're the dream that's still alive". Not a dream. Not one of many dreams. But the dream. After all else is gone, Jesus Christ is the one hope and one dream we have left. And I broke down and sobbed. And then you reached out to me and sent me a copy of your son's CD, which I still have and is very, very, very precious to me.

I since remarried. God seemed to move heaven and earth to bring Eileen and me together, and this marriage has been a blessing. We now have a precious little 3 1/2 year old boy we named after my brother who passed in 2008. But I still have memories of singing worship songs with the guitar on the night before he passed away from congestive heart failure and seeing him give me his thumbs up sign. He was 39--close to the age your son was.

Eileen and I are working and praying toward being used in leading others to Christ based on a ministry called The Last Reformation started by a guy named Torben Sondergaard out of Denmark together with another friend here in Fresno, and our church and pastor (my best friend) is in support of our efforts with the Businessmen's Fellowship International here in Fresno, too. So, there is a hope that is still alive.

Thank you again and your son, too, and Point of Grace.

I’ve witnessed God’s grace way too many times in my life, and I can’t thank Him enough for each one. His most recent act of grace has been keeping me free from seizures for 21 months after I had one back in May 2022. I’m so thankful!!!!!!

You might be interested to know that my son, Grant Cunningham, wrote the lyrics for "The Great Divide."  Thanks to a beautiful rendition by Point of Grace, the song won a Dove award in 1997.  We lost Grant in July of 2002 after he suffered a fatal brain injury while playing in a soccer game.  He was 37 at the time and A&R Director at Sparrow Records.  Paul Cunningham

+Daniel Dick - Daniel, shortly after Grant's passing I put together a double CD containing his remarks made to songwriters at GMA's "Seminar in the Rockies" in the summers of 2000 and 2001. The CDs also contain the sound tracks of 30 of his best songs (in my opinion). If you would like a complimentary set, I'll need a mailing address.

Absolutely Beautiful and touching song. Played this like 6 times. Jesus is truly the bridge so that we could get across to the great divide. Thank you Lord for sacrificing your life on the cross for me. Oh love of God so rich and pure 🙏😌

I love this song. I was a teenager in the 90's when it was popular. I remember our pastor's daughter (who had an amazing voice) singing this on a Sunday morning. I love the illustration this gives. I currently teach 5th grade in a Christian school, and while teaching the verse John 14:6 (Jesus answered, I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.), I drew this as an illustration on the chalkboard, with two cliffs, one side us, the other side God. Then I made a cross that bridged the "great divide". Jesus made the only way.

When ever I hear this song I think about what Jesus did for us ever time. I can't believe that Jesus would do that for me. I feel so loved. The Lord has given us a bridge to reach  the other side. I love this song and I am in Love with Jesus when I hear this song ever time.
