Several people here really missed the point of this video, his message wasn't saying that sports/arts or people involved in these things aren't important or don't contribute to the world, of course they do.(He even says in the description that these athletes work REALLY hard to get where they are, and they deserve respect for their passion and endurance). The point of this video was explaining how people aspiring to be scientists aren't held up to the same light as athletes and actors etc. He's not saying people should stop beings athletes or artists overall to be scientists, that's just absurd. If you wanna be an athlete, then go for it, if you wanna be a scientist, go for it. Do what you love to do, this is your life and you have the freedom to do any profession you feel happy doing.

I agree with this 100 percent. Americans put way too much enfessis on sports and pop culture instead of intellect. This past year I was in an advanced comouter class that I had to fight with the school to get. It lasted a semester before it was thrown out. The reason, help the idiot kids who dont give a fly fuck about school. I am proud to say that in august I start college and will be dual majoring in computer science and mechatroics engineering

Good for you!!! Im glad to hear that. We need all the physicians we can get. I wanted to be a psychiatrist then nuerologist, but only later in life. I lost the opportunity & its been hell trying to get it back. Becoming a physician is astronomically difficult, so I cant do anything less than to have the highest respect for them.

My friend was one of the 5 representing Norway in the physics olympics not just a couple a weeks ago, I'm really proud of him even though he ended under 2/3 of the contestants :P

I loved this video. It made me a little more glad I live in England and I loved your impersonation. Watching the Olympics, even though it would be nice to see our nation win golds, I was glad to see other countries win when they deserved it. Seeing so many new countries just being there to compete even when they know they have little chance, is nice too. Too many people don't seem to realise that the more populated the country and more money into sports, the greater chance they have of golds.

I've had internal struggles about pursuing science since I was young because as interested as I was (and am) in it, it didn't seem worthwhile and the potential in terms of jobs and achievements (economical and personal) were never visible to me until late in high school. Now I'm an electrical and computer engineering student, and I wholeheartedly agree that kids need to be exposed to science and have role models like Bill Nye to aspire to

You're right, TJ! Once I got over the popular image of an engineer as a nerd, I became an engineer. That was the best day of my self-examined life. Now, 35 years later, I'm grateful that I became a scientist & engineer; a person who uses reality to accomplish truly important progress.

That comment wasn't cringey. But I feel you. It's not your fault really. It's this shallow dichotomy that adults label young people with. Kids whom are socializing are seen as hedonistic sheeple. Kids whom are introverted are seen as intellectual.
But, also, kids aren't allowed to have lives outside of academics.
Ironically, adults don't have any academic skills in their self-worth. They only care about politics and old school pop culture. Yet, they're seen as mature just based on age alone.

I was actually pretty interested in being a scientist as a kid and was basically told I wasn't good enough at math to be one at like age seven so that went down the toilet pretty fast. It held true through the years though so that was probably for the best in my case.

I was JUST talking to a friend about the exact same thing the other day, regarding the Olympics.. And sports, in general. I love how when they repeatedly play Olympians' bio's, they constantly talk about "wanting to win a medal to pull their family out of the ghetto"(in so many words).What about going to school and learning something? What about getting a few college degrees under your belt so you won't have to worry about future arthritis and heart disease? Being smart doesn't have a shelf-life

This video really describes me. I'm 16 and really want to go into chemistry or theoritcal physics at University of Chicago but part of me in the back of my mind thinks I should try acting instead. Even though my dad knows I'm an intellectual type he wants me to be a doctor or develop some sort of commercial product with science, but that's not what I want to do. I'm more well known at my school for playing tennis than doing advanced classes and keeping up my gpa. Kind of bums me out.

yep i did. and i forgot to say the fossil was the first ever MUSCLE found of an apatosaurus. it was in Morrison Colorado. since you wanted to be a paleontologist you have probably heard of the Morrison formation. i also got to go to Marsh quarry were they found the most complete stegosaurus ever found. and then i got to actually see the skeleton at a museum in Cannon city, Co. it was an amazing experience

In Canadian high schools in my city of Toronto, specifically the one I went to, only about 30% of the students acted anything like that. About 60% were neutral to science or partying, and about 10% are into science in one way or another.

I'm a 14 year old kid living in America, and I for one definitely want to be an engineer. Computer programming and electronics are my hobbies, and I feel pretty lucky to have friends who think my inventions are really cool and have similar interests, rather than calling me a nerd and teasing me.

I think we shouldn't be worried if other people -many times people we don't know- admire us. I preffer to be proud of what I do, be proud of the people I care about. I agree that physicists, engineers, etc, are not praised as a "Karaoke" Idol participant by normal (and the vast majority) of people. It's because it´s much simpler, doesn't require to study or learn about it. We give the limitations to our knowledge, and how to use it. That doesn't make us better or worse. I agree as someone who actually lives in the generation and group that he is talking about(I am 15 and a christian) he is exactly right. There are only a few kids I know who aspire to be something great. As with being a christian, if a scientist can provide enough evidence I do not care what it is, I will listen. My highschool seems to put sports over academics on a consistent basis. They actually had a random spur of the moment pep rally one day when the basketball team was going to the playoffs, and teachers had to postpone tests and shit to cheer on a mediocre basketball team. That bothered me.

I was a kid who loved science! So much so that I had to give up taking music, which was really hard and frustrating (that's a whole other story.. damn education system). I actually got my first job today as a Lab Tech and I don't feel like a nerd one bit! I actually think people respect me more for following my heart... I'm so sick of this bullshit! I agree. I know a few engineers, and there is one thing they say is the most important when you start out: Do hands on work. Build your own projects. Get your hands dirty. They hire high marks all the time... and then those guys lose their jobs to engineers that have actual practical experience.

I think that most people root for their country in the Olympics due to national pride, not escapism. But I totally agree with your main point, that America's society does not reward those who seek knowledge, and even those whose jobs are to dispense that knowledge (I.E. teachers).

Yes they do in a way force us to watch sports and other meaningless dribble. Anybody who studies (and is good at, mind you) college level psychology can tell you the effects that advertiesements, subliminal messaging, and simple word of mouth can have on your decision making and your attention. And the shows or activities that are talked about the most, advertised the most, and shown the most are sports, mind-numbing shows like Jersey Shore, and other pathetic things.

My friend wants to be a psychologist. When she told someone this they replied "No way! Can you tell me my future then?" I always try to pass such comments off as foolish. Perhaps their parents never taught them much or encouraged them to seek education. I don't believe in stupid people, only fools who dismiss educating themselves. However, I still can't help shaking my head in shame at humanity sometimes.

Ironically, people decades ago that actually cared about academics at the Big Three Ivies were denounced as "grinds" by the faculty. Even today admissions is based largely off subjective criteria, and certain private schools (also known as feeder schools) confer a great advantage in the admissions process.

tbh every country has its ups and down and i find that a similar trait in the uk maybe not as sever but it occurs and i know countries like china get bad rep but if ur good at something in china its rewarded and your pushed to excel in that area and i guess thats down to their ethics towards bringing honouring to themselves and their families

I chose to study chemical engineering, however I now feel as though it was a mistake for me as it doesn't appeal to my interests. I don't plan on leaving the sciences though, I'll likely take up pharmacology after my undergraduate. -regardless of how much longer that'll take. I hope someone follows up and takes the spot as a chemical engineer that I left behind, and that they do it better than I ever could.

I never specified that they were American scientists & engineers, but a lot of them who worked on those and similar projects certainly were. If you take a look at something like the Manhattan Project, sure, maybe there were lots of foreign scientists that worked on it, but it's also important to recognize the contributions of American scientists as well. There were vast numbers of scientists and engineers who were employed working on these things, not just a handful that you commonly hear about.

The reason that I have decided to major in Physics and minor in math and chem is because I want to help this country. I plan on teaching. I think I can offer something valuable to the younger generations. I still have hope. There is a lot of stupidity in this country, but we did just sit by and let this happen, didn't we?

I agree that the Olympics seem to have been tainted with rhetoric and propaganda. But as for the broadcasting of sports in general, I think we need things like that. Simple, detached entertainment is a beautiful thing.

AA, you need to have an athletic lifestyle. It's not that bad, you can be athletic and intelligent. In schools you can't play sports unless you are passing all of your classes. Sure the classes aren't hard to pass, but still.McDonalds being a freaking sponsor is what makes me go crazy.

I agree with you 100% TJ. Being someone who is in school has more than enough experience to tell you that most kids are idiots. I'm practically shunned because I'm smarter than most kids. Almost everyone tells me to put the text book down and play baseball or some crap like that. It really saddens me to see that the future of American education is heading right down the toilet.

Just up until the break up of the Soviet Union, the Soviets dominated the Olympic games. That enabled the U.S. to take a few Olympics in succession (96,00,04). The Chinese rise in Olympic performance makes things interesting I think I am actually watching badminton this morning because of it. Very close between them and the U.S. this time around after China ran away with it on their home soil in 08.

I think that part of the problem is that you can watch the Olympics without being athletic but you can't really follow a deep en intelligent conversation without being smart. So it makes for bad television

I remain neutral in the Olympics. I believe all athletes who play by the rules deserve equal praise and respect for their tries and achievements. This isn't about country Vs country, it's about individual and team achievement. Or, at least I think it should be naw.
