It is one of the band's most well-known and popular songs. The song itself is a hard rock anthem, and lyrically features themes relating to rebellion and social upheaval, although May claims that it is about having ambitions and fighting for one's own goals.

On the Greatest Hits II DVD, Brian May commented that the song was inspired by his 2nd wife, Anita Dobson's favourite motto, "I Want it All, and I Want It Now!" The idea of having intro, verses, choruses and solos over the same chord progression was reused on their next album with another May song, "The Show Must Go On", which was made in 1990. Mercury and May share the lead vocals. Mercury played keyboards, May played acoustic and electric guitars and Taylor used double-kick bass drum for the first time.

In reviewing The Miracle for Allmusic, Greg Prato suggested that the song, like title track "The Miracle", "reflect(s) on [...] the state of the world in the late '80s," summarising the song stylistically as "heavy rock." Melville-based newspaper Newsday mentioned "I Want It All" as one of "The best" of the album, describing it as "colored by May's rocking guitar rolls and Mercury's rough-boys vocals." In reviewing the album, The Dallas Morning News described "I Want It All" in some depth, explaining how it "starts off with a Bowiesque guitar part, picks up a heavy cargo of steel, quickly lays down the hard line implied by the title, then takes flight along Mr. May's greased fretboard."

Brian May spoke of the song in an 1989 interview promoting the album.

"'I Want It All' reestablishes our old image in a way. It's nice to come back with something strong. Something that reminds people we're a live group. I don't think we're a singles band, really. Just before we put the single out I started listening to what's on the radio, and the kind of stuff that becomes a hit these days bears no resemblance to what we do. People only remember the hits, but I suppose we have done okay.""

As part of the commentary on Queen's Greatest Video Hits 2 DVD, May expanded further:

"We were heading into the period where we decided to share the credit for all the songs, and John has said that [the song] was pretty much a finished song when we went into the studios – that's true, it was just this riff that I was obsessed with for months. The actual title was a favorite phrase of Anita's, a very ambitious girl: 'I want it all, and I want it now '... We were never able to perform this song live. It would have become something of the staple core of the Queen show, I'm sure, very participatory. It was designed for the audience to sing along to, very anthemic."

"Interesting, I wrote myself a bit in the middle. I can't remember quite why that was, it's a very sort of Pete Townshend thing to do, isn't it? But it made a nice little kind of duet in the middle, a bit of sparring between me and Freddie, and I know he enjoyed that."

I put flowers at his statue in Montreux, Switzerland in 2001. During the season without tourists, residents of Montreux & Vevey take care that it never runs out of flowers. One of the prettiest spots on Earth I've ever seen, and since then completely understand why he went there when he needed an escape (also.. to die). He was not bothered by paparazzi & that's an awesome tribute the City paid to him with a lifesize statue.

Montreux also has a 12-13th century castle nearby, Chillon.. from Lord Byron's poem "The Prisoner of Chillon". Inside castle dungeons you can still find the old instruments of torture..

For anyone interested - there are great walking tours of Montreux & Chillon on YT. It's well worth seeing, but in real life it makes you feel like you're walking through a postcard.

Brian said in the Documentary, "Days of our Lives". He said that the whole AIDS thing gave him something to do, something to get up out of bed everyday. So Freddie took his dying self and pushed himself to make his last album with the band.

In Brain's interview about the song "The Show Must Go On", he was having a conversation with Freddie. Brian said that he can't hit the high notes because he was dying. But Freddie took a shot of vodka and said "I'll f*cking do it, darling" And he gave it his all.

In one interview, Brian again said that they were working on "Mother Love" which Freddie called it quits. He said that Freddie was feeling very sick and said that he will record the other parts tomorrow, there was no tomorrow.
Freddie died the following day and Brian completed the vocal parts himself.

Freddie Mercury is the man who had AIDS but gave us some of the strongest songs in their lineup. He was the man who gave himself up for better understanding of the disease. He was the man who gave us "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "The Show Must Go On". He is the man who will be remembered from 100 years from now. Along with the greats of music, Freddie Mercury will never be forgotten.

I've seen war firsthand (not a vet, a teenager caught up btwn 3 sides in the 90s Balkans war).. and have learned at a young age that tomorrow isn't guaranteed to any of us. Freddie had the strength & courage to do what even most of the healthy people nowadays can't manage to do/understand: Live every day like it's the last, take as much from it as possible, tell those you love that you love them (it's not sappy, even for manliest of men!) — because if we don't, we might regret it bitterly tomorrow, or forever.

Thank you for that synopsis.. I'll have to find the documentary you mentioned. Queen inspired so many other bands, including my favorite metal band: Blind Guardian. They named an album "A Night at the Opera" as a tribute to Queen (and covered a song or two of theirs, but none are on that album).

sadly he was beginning to look really ill here loss of weight, which the baggy clothes where hiding
slightly bloated face, not that he couldnt carry that he did, and the beard helped but still giving his all and hitting those notes like a God...oh yea he is. :)

The first time they played this live was at the tribute concert. Roger Daltrey did a great job but a couple notes were too high for him. Freddie would've destroyed this song live.

If he hadn't got that f...ing AIDS, he could be still touring, like so many artists. He could be 72 today. How many are still there, now, playing live ?. He could have recorded, how many more songs ? And in general the voice doesn't decay much if they take care of it. So, the world missed 27 possible years of a great artist.

@Dion Share I was in 6th grade, in a travel with my school, and when reached to a dancing waters in a theme park, all hits by queen started to sound, till that moment, I didn't like music at all, I hated music, it sounded all boring to me, till for the first time I heard Queen "we are the champions" "don't stop me now" "I want it all solo" "show must go on" and I travelled to an unknown dimmension where music stopped being boring and turned into these beautiful sounds and notes out of this world, it was QUEEN... yeap, and I hated music, now I'm a musician myself :)
