Overall Meaning

At first glance, the lyrics to Queen's song "I Want To Be Free" seem to be straightforward - the repeated phrase "Gotta get to hell" suggests the singer's desire to break free from constraints and live life on their own terms, even if it means damnation. However, the chorus complicates things with its repetition of "I wanna be me, I wanna be free, but what's that mean?" This suggests that the singer's desire for freedom may not be as simple as they initially believed. They may not fully understand what it means to be themselves, and how that fits into their quest for freedom.

The repeated phrase "What's that mean?" throughout the chorus adds to this confusion and self-doubt. The singer may feel trapped by societal expectations and norms, unsure of what it truly means to live authentically. The repeated phrase "making me go crazy" implies a sense of desperation and frustration, as if the singer is on the verge of a breakdown. The song ultimately ends with a final repetition of "I wanna be free" - a hopeful insistence that the search for self-discovery and liberation is worth the struggle.

Free What's that mean Gotta get to hell What's that mean Gotta get to hell What's that mean What's that mean

I want to be free I want to be free I want to be free (Making me go crazy) I want to be free (Do ya) Free
The repetition of 'I want to be free' shows the singer's obsession with the idea, even as they struggle with what it means. The final 'free' can be seen as an affirmation of this desire or a plea for someone to help them achieve it ('do ya').

I want to break free, I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self-satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free
I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
This time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love
It's strange but it's true, hey
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure when I walk out that door
Oh, I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, I want to break free
But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So, baby, can't you see I've got to break free?
I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want
I want to break free

It's been almost 40 years, A message to the future generations: Don't let this beautiful masterpiece die!

@DamienDarkside

Sadly enough, the 55 year olds who were teens at this time are currently promoting laws that restrict LGBT+ people - who would have included Freddy as a target - and wants to pretend they don't exist. You know, the same people who said "the artist formerly known as Prince" instead of "Prince" are suddenly confused at the "sudden rise of LGBT" like they haven't been in your faces since on mainstream since the 70s.
