Ms. Portman has composed the scores for dozens of feature films, including "Emma", "Chocolat", "Oliver Twist", "The Cider House Rules", "The Duchess", and "Never Let Me Go".
She was the first female composer to win an Academy Award in the category of Best Musical or Comedy Score (for "Emma" in 1996). Ms. Portman was also nominated for Academy Awards for her scores for "The Cider House Rules" in 1999 and "Chocolat" in 2000.
She composed a score for the film "Dangerous Beauty," but it was unused; George Fenton replaced her, but some of her material still remains in the film. For television she composed the score for all thirteen episodes of Jim Henson's The Storyteller and two episodes of The Jim Henson Hour ("Monster Maker" and "Living with Dinosaurs"). Her other works include a children's opera, The Little Prince, which was later adapted for television, and Little House on the Prairie, a musical based upon the Laura Ingalls Wilder books "Little House on the Prairie" (2008). Ms. Portman was commissioned to write a piece of choral music for the BBC Proms series in August 2007.
On 19 May 2010, she was honored at the BMI Film & TV Awards with the Richard Kirk Award which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. Portman made BMI history as she became the first woman composer to receive the honor.
Portman was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.

It's Too Late
Rachel Portman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'
And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no
It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, an' I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool
And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no
There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you
But it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no, no, no, no
It's too late, baby, it's too late now, darling
It's too late
The lyrics to Rachel Portman's "It's Too Late" suggest a relationship that has run its course. The singer, who stays in bed all morning to pass the time, feels that something is wrong and that one of them is changing, or maybe they've just stopped trying. The chorus repeats that it's too late, that despite their efforts to make it work, something inside has died and can no longer be hidden or faked. It used to be easy when they were light and breezy, but now they look unhappy and foolish.
The song captures the pain of a relationship that has reached its conclusion, but it also acknowledges that there were good times and that the singer was glad for what they had and how they once loved each other. They cannot stay together, however, and the chorus affirms that it's too late. The song ends on this repeated refrain, suggesting that the relationship is truly over and cannot be salvaged.

Ah, as am I! :) I combined my love for sewing and history when I was... eleven? Twelve? I can't remember ahaha! :P I can say I personally find MAKING stays more painful than actually wearing them ahahaha! (I never want to file another reed EVER AGAIN!) :P :D

This is an amazing film and beautiful music. Captures the time period perfectly. I love the dresses! Its strange, in some respects it was simpler times, but in many it was much more complex and restrictive - especially for women. Keira is great in this film!

Good for you! I draft most of my own patterns, but I used one for my stays. Did it all by hand, being period and what not. :P My hands have not forgiven me for that just yet heheh...!

Really? That's fascinating! I'll have to check it out! Thank you! :D

Aye- what I meant is that if they're made correctly to fit you, you aught to be able to lace them quite tight and still have them be comfortable. That's not to say of course that they can't BE laced uncomfortably tight- everyone has days where their stays are pinching! :P But in general, especially back then, stay makers made an effort to fit stays so that they could be laced more tightly without being uncomfortable. Do you historical costume? :D

The music makes me feel lonely, had I been Gee.

Stays as they were called then ('corset' didn't come in until the early 19th century) are actually quite comfortable- as are other eras of stays or corsets. If they're uncomfortable, they don't fit you correctly. Whenever I wear my payre of bodies/stays/corset they don't feel uncomfortable at all- just supportive. Like you're getting a big hug. :) And yes... we should dress like that still. I know I always feel wonderful when I do! :D
