”music has the power to cross borders, to break military sieges and to establish real dialogue.”
De la Rocha argues that the current political, social and cultural systems within the United States are immoral in today’s society. With this in mind, “Take the Power Back” serves as a message to empower individuals to reclaim power from the government so it can be returned to the people. However, this must be achieved through self-education – lies are bred at the hands of capitalist media and schooling is heavily Eurocentric so we must educate ourselves on our own cultures and those of minorities.
During the 2000 Democratic National Convention, Rage Against the Machine held a free concert in protest of the two-party system. De la Rocha told the crowd:
“Brothers and sisters, all electoral freedoms in this country are over so long as it’s controlled by corporations. Brothers and sisters, we are not going to allow these streets to be taken over by the Democrats or the Republicans. Because it’s all of us who have built this city, and we can tear it down unless they give us what we need.“
“Take the Power Back” later appeared on a cryptic webpage as the slogan for the supergroup Prophets of Rage.

But the system that dissed us
Teaches us to read and right
So called facts are fraud
They want us to allege and pledge
And bow down to their God
Lost the culture, the culture lost
Spun our minds and through timeIgnorance has taken over
Yo, we gotta take the power back!
Bam! Here's the plan
Motherfuck Uncle Sam
Step back, I know who I am
Raise up your ear, I'll drop the style and clear
It's the beats and the lyrics they fear
The rage is relentless
We need a movement with a quickness
You are the witness of change
And to counteract
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
The present curriculum
I put my fist in 'em
Eurocentric every last one of 'em
See right through the red, white and blue disguise
With lecture I puncture the structure of lies
Installed in our minds and attempting
To hold us back
We've got to take it back
Holes in our spirit causin' tears and fears
I'm inferior? Who's inferior?
Yeah, we need to check the interior
Of the system that cares about only one culture
And that is why
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
Hey yo check, we're gonna have to break it, break it,
break it down
Aw shit!
Ugh!
And like this Ugh!
Come on, yeah! Bring it back the other way!
The teacher stands in front of the class
But the lesson plan he can't recall
The student's eyes don't perceive the lies
Bouncing off every fucking wall
His composure is well kept
I guess he fears playing the fool
The complacent students sit and listen to some of that
Bullshit that he learned in school
Europe ain't my rope to swing on
Can't learn a thing from it
Yet we hang from it
Gotta get it, gotta get it together then
Like the motherfuckin' weathermen
To expose and close the doors on those who try
To strangle and mangle the truth
'Cause the circle of hatred continues unless we react
We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back
Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back
No more lies
Ugh!
Yeah!
Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!
Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!
Ugh!
Yeah!
The opening lines of "Take the Power Back" by Rage Against the Machine suggest that education is the solution to the problems caused by oppressive systems of power. However, the irony of this is pointed out in the following lines, where the same "system that dissed us" is the one that teaches us. The education provided by such a system is described as fraudulent, perpetuating the lies and biases of those who hold power. The song highlights how this system is designed to make people submit to authority and follow blindly, instead of thinking independently.
The chorus of "Take the Power Back" is a call to action, demanding a movement to reclaim power from those who hold it. The second verse tackles the issue of education specifically, critiquing how Eurocentric and biased it is. The artist highlights that one-sided stories and lies perpetuated for years cause harm to the human spirit. This verse also challenges the idea of inferiority based on one's culture or race. The final verse is a direct criticism of the education system that perpetuates lies and propaganda. It calls for taking back power and exposing those who try to strangle and manipulate the truth.
Overall, the song is a call for people to recognize the power structures that exist and actively resist them. It argues that education and exposure to the truth are essential ingredients in this resistance.

Track so hard, they added a suicide warning🔥🔥🔥
@Doompile
That’s what I was thinking?!?!😅
@galactic85
They added it because the album cover is a photo from a real life incident where a Buddhist lit himself on fire as an act of protest.
@adyx
If you have YouTube Music, tracks from this album won't play at all because of the warning, even when it's not a video.
