DeVaughn's musical story began with his mother's vinyl collection. "I always loved music so I would sneak into her record collection when she wasn't around and play her stuff." DeVaughn's father, noted jazz musician Abdul Wadud was also an influence. DeVaughn knew at an early age that he would become an entertainer.
DeVaughn graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland; then headed to nearby Coppin State. It was the first day of college that changed the course of his life. "I saw a group of guys standing outside singing, Boyz II Men style," remembers DeVaughn. "I just went up there and started harmonizing with them. Before I knew what was going on, I was in a group, cutting class to write lyrics and record." After winning $2,000.00 in a talent show at Bar None, a Washington D.C. nightclub, DeVaughn decided to go for broke and invested all of his winnings into a CD burner. Several independent releases led to a showcase with Jive Records, and the career was on it's way.

should we draw a line
should we cease the time
take thing further
or should we just pretend, like love ain't closing in
like i don't recognize
we drawn to
one another
friends or lovers
its time to chose
Raheem DeVaughn's song "Position" is a reflection of the internal conflict that a person might face when trying to navigate their feelings towards another person. The first few lines of the song question whether to remain friends, set boundaries or take things towards a romantic or more intimate level. The lyrics showcase the dilemma that a person may face when they start to feel closer to their friend, and whether they should continue to be platonic or pursue a deeper connection.
The lyrics "should we just pretend, like love ain't closing in, like I don't recognize, like you don't realize" display the hesitancy of both parties involved, afraid to take the next step towards a possible romantic relationship. The song is a heartfelt plea to the other person to make a choice, whether to remain friends or take the relationship process forward, as the power of attraction is too strong to ignore.
In conclusion, "Position" is an excellent representation of how complex and confusing it can be when navigating the gray area between friendship and love. The song is a plea to the other person to make a decision, to choose between staying friends or pursue something more profound.
