Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

Rancid Lyrics

This place is a ghost town now
This place has lost it's people
This place has lost it's charm
The coals on the fire
Ain't burnin' no more
In the lake shore foundries
That knows no boundaries
This place is a tale of terror
This place is a ghost town now
This place has lost its people
This place has lost its charm
The land of liberty has been betrayed by
The monster corporations
The monster won't stop 'till
It lays waste to everything
This place is a tale of terror
This place is a ghost town now
This place has lost its people
This place has lost its charm

The lyrics of Rancid's song "This Place" paint a picture of a once thriving town that has been neglected by the powers that be. The song speaks to the struggles of blue-collar workers who have been left behind by a corrupt system. The line "This place is a tale of terror" sets the tone for the rest of the song, suggesting that this town is no longer a safe haven for those who call it home. The repetition of "This place has lost its people, this place has lost its charm" further emphasizes the effects of corporate greed and neglect on the town and its inhabitants.
The lyrics go on to mention the once-burning coals on fire, which are now extinguished, suggesting that the once-thriving industry that powered the town has slowly died out. The workers in the foundries have been misled by corporations that have no boundaries, suggesting a lack of ethics and empathy on the part of those in power. It is clear that these corporations value profit over people, and their actions have had devastating consequences for the town and those who live there.
The song speaks to the larger issue of the betrayal of the land of liberty by corporations that prioritize their bottom line over the well-being of the communities they operate in. The monster corporations won't stop until they have laid waste to everything, leaving behind only ghost towns and tales of terror. In conclusion, Rancid’s lyrics in “This Place” serves as a timely reminder of the devastating impact of corporate greed on people’s lives and the importance of standing up to such harmful practices.
