Ojalá
Raphael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

In the song "Ojalá" by Raphael, the singer expresses his deepest wishes and hopes for the person he loves to be happy, but also for her to be far away from him. He hopes that leaves will not touch her skin when they fall, for fear that they will turn into glass, symbolizing the fragility of life and love. He wishes that rain will no longer be considered a miracle that falls on her body, and that the moon can freely rise without her presence. He asks that the earth does not kiss her steps, as it might keep her grounded and near.

Continuing with his wishes, Raphael expresses his hope that the person he loves will no longer look at him with constant eyes, or speak with precise words and perfect smiles. He wishes for something powerful enough to erase her from his life and memory, and that desire itself would leave her and go away to a place of the dead and the flowers. He hopes that the dawn will not scream in his ears, that her name will be forgotten by their mutual acquaintances, and that the walls will no longer keep her noises.

"Ojalá" is a heartfelt and heart-wrenching song that speaks of the beautiful, yet painful nature of love. The singer wishes for the best for the person he loves, but also acknowledges that being near her will only cause him more pain. The song ends with the hope that he won't be able to touch her, not even through songs.
