History: Rascal Flatts were founded near Columbus, Ohio. Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus were second cousins from a musical family. DeMarcus's brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a country music artist. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992, earning his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. In 1997, he finally convinced LeVox to leave behind his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and follow his musical dreams as well.
DeMarcus soon joined Chely Wright's band, and there he met Joe Don Rooney. DeMarcus and LeVox were working in a Printer's Alley nightclub, and when their part-time guitarist could not make it one night, DeMarcus invited Rooney to sit in. Eventually, they took the name Rascal Flatts and began performing together, getting signed to Lyric Street Records in late 1999.
The band was recently announced that they have celebrated 10 years of being one of the hottest country bands of the decade. On January 7, 2020, Rascal Flatts announced that they would be disbanding following a farewell tour after twenty years together. However, this farewell tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the group's disbandment was officially confirmed in October 2021.
Holes
Rascal Flatts Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Two in the bedroom from that night I lost it
One deep inside me determined to stay
They don't get any bigger but they don't go away
Holes in and around me I keep falling back into
Holes digging its around me
God knows what I'm gonna do
Left by you
I pour drink after drink but nothing hit bottom
I've been on my knees admitted my problem
The love that we made still barely an echo
I'll try anything in these vacant hollow
Holes in and around me I keep falling back into
Holes digging its around me
God knows what I'm gonna do
To fill in these holes left by you
Left by you
There's two through my hands and one through my feet
From this cross that I bear until the day that I see
you again
And one in my heart from the day when we met
I should have known better but I leapt.
Rascal Flatts's song Holes is a powerful ballad that delves into the deep emotional wounds that come with a heartbreak. The lyrics are full of metaphors and vivid imagery, painting a picture of the internal turmoil that comes with the aftermath of a relationship falling apart. The song talks about the different "holes" left behind - physical, emotional, and mental - that refuse to go away, no matter how much the singer tries to cope.
The first verse talks about the physical "holes" left behind by the failed relationship - three holes in the wall from pictures in the closet, two holes in the bedroom from a night where the singer "lost it", and one hole deep inside, determined to stay. The second verse delves into the emotional holes -the singer is drowning in alcohol, trying to dull the pain, but nothing helps them hit the bottom. They've admitted their problems and tried everything to fill the "vacant hollow". The chorus of the song is especially powerful, repeating the mantra of "holes in and around me I keep falling back into / Holes digging its around me / God knows what I'm gonna do / To fill in these holes left by you / Left by you."
The bridge of the song introduces religious imagery, with two holes through the hands and one through the feet from the cross that the singer bears. The last "hole" mentioned is in the heart from the day the singer met the person who left the holes in the first place. The song ends on the bittersweet hope that the singer will see their loved one again.
