History: Rascal Flatts were founded near Columbus, Ohio. Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus were second cousins from a musical family. DeMarcus's brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a country music artist. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992, earning his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. In 1997, he finally convinced LeVox to leave behind his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and follow his musical dreams as well.
DeMarcus soon joined Chely Wright's band, and there he met Joe Don Rooney. DeMarcus and LeVox were working in a Printer's Alley nightclub, and when their part-time guitarist could not make it one night, DeMarcus invited Rooney to sit in. Eventually, they took the name Rascal Flatts and began performing together, getting signed to Lyric Street Records in late 1999.
The band was recently announced that they have celebrated 10 years of being one of the hottest country bands of the decade. On January 7, 2020, Rascal Flatts announced that they would be disbanding following a farewell tour after twenty years together. However, this farewell tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the group's disbandment was officially confirmed in October 2021.

Every time I see this city through the clouds I get that way
Call me crazy for missing you like this but I do
By now I figured you had all your numbers changed
It's been at least a year since I called you up to say
We need to talk I got this job and I think I'm going to take it
'Cause I been waiting all my life
It's my chance of a lifetime I just know it is
I gotta go find these dreams
Was the last thing that I said
And then I did
I can see clear to the mountains as I head up our old street
I remember how we'd call in sick on days like these
And turn the music up roll the windows down and just drive
You talked me outta givin' up on myself so many times
Convinced me to get in while I could regrets hang heavy on the mind
But you never doubted me you kept pushing me
Saying you've been waiting all your life for a break like this
It's your chance of a lifetime you just know it is
You gotta go find those dreams
Was the last thing that you said
And then I did
But you were wrong
Love was what I wanted all along
And now you're gone
I thought about calling you when I got off the plane
Every time I see this city through the clouds I get that way
But you were wrong
Love was what I wanted all along
Rascal Flatts's song, Then I Did, is a heartfelt ballad that tells the story of a person who decides to pursue their dreams, even if it means leaving someone they love behind. The song starts with the singer contemplating calling their lover when they land in the city, but they hesitate because they assume their number has changed. Then, they reminisce about a conversation they had with their lover a year ago when they decided to pursue their dream job, leaving behind everything they knew.
The chorus of the song highlights the pivotal moment when the singer decides to go after their passion despite the odds - "And then I did." They remember the drive up the mountains, the moments when their lover had talked them out of giving up, and how they had supported them in taking this chance. The last words their lover had spoken were, "you gotta go find those dreams," and the singer knew that it was time to take the leap.
However, the song takes a tragic turn when the singer realizes that love was what they wanted all along, and their lover was, in fact, wrong about their dreams. The song ends with the singer coming back to the city, seeing it through the clouds, and remembering their lost love.
Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that people have to make to pursue their dreams and the toll it can take on their relationships. It is a nostalgic and melancholic ballad that will tug at listeners' heartstrings.
