Call Me Alice
Rasputina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't you see, gravity is pulling down on me
See the sky a sickened lie just made to pacify me

Going through the motions
Feeling the explosion in my face

A, B and C abandoned but controlled
M can't you see? Half of me was sold
X, Y and Z Xerox your zombies then
There's nothing here but......life 101

Can't you see blasphemy pulls me from my knees
Standing tall, I feel it all and crawl back underneath

Going through the motions
feeling the explosion in my face
(alright everybody please have a seat now)

A, B and C abandoned but controlled
(I need you all to find your space and settle in, this movie's starting soon)
M can't you see? Half of me was sold
(and after this you'll be required to follow us, into the other room)
X, Y and Z Xerox your zombies then
(My name is law and this is order and on behalf of the universe)
There's nothing here but......life 101
(we'd like to welcome you to Life 101.)

There's no drinking, there's no swearing, body piercing is not accepted, do not dye your hair or tattoo, you must do what is expected.
(Learn your member tips now and set the standard for your senses).
You may think only when told to.
You may think only what they tell you.
Stay within your culture, marry within your own race.
Keep in mind they may change the rules at any time and you must be aware of these changes.
Be keen and smart and beautiful.
Learn to have a family. Again, welcome to Life 101

A, B and C abandoned but controlled
M can't you see? Half of me was sold
X, Y and Z Xerox your zombies then
(do not dye your hair or tattoo, you must do what is expected)
There's nothing here but......life 101
(You may think only what they tell you, marry within your own race, have a large family, Be keen and smart and beautiful)

A, B and C abandoned but controlled
M can't you see? Half of me was sold
(There's no drinking, there's no swearing, body piercing is not accepted)
X, Y and Z Xerox your zombies then
(do not dye your hair or tattoo, you must do what is expected, learn your numbers and ten commandments )
There's nothing here but......
(You may think only when told to)
There's nothing here but......
(You may think only what they tell you)
There's nothing here but......
(Stay within your culture, marry within your own race)
There's nothing here but......
(Keep in mind they may change the rules at any time and you must be aware of these changes)

There's nothing here but......Life 101
(Be keen and smart and beautiful, Again, welcome to Life 101)

Overall Meaning

"Call Me Alice" by Rasputina is a song that speaks of societal and cultural oppression. The lyrics express a feeling of suffocation brought about by the expectations and limitations placed on individuals by society. The first line "Can't you see, gravity is pulling down on me," describes a feeling of weight and pressure upon the singer, unable to escape the gravity of societal norms. The next line "See the sky a sickened lie just made to pacify me," speaks to the idea that the sky represents the limit of what is possible, yet it is a lie created to pacify and limit people's ambition.

The chorus, "A, B and C abandoned but controlled, M can't you see? Half of me was sold, X, Y and Z Xerox your zombies then, there's nothing here but...Life 101," further emphasizes the constraints and guidelines set by society. The reference to ABC and XYZ is a nod to the basics of learning, suggesting that people are conditioned from a young age. The M is symbolic of the self, and how half of it is being sold to conform to societal norms. The phrase "Xerox your zombies" implies a copy-paste culture, where people are expected to blindly follow the norms put in place. The line "there's nothing here but Life 101" is a reference to the idea that there is nothing else to life but following societal norms.

The bridge where the singer is told "There's no drinking, there's no swearing, body piercing is not accepted, do not dye your hair or tattoo, you must do what is expected," reinforces the strict expectations and limitations of society. The line "Stay within your culture, marry within your own race" speaks to cultural norms and the idea that stepping outside of one's culture or race is not acceptable. The song ends with the repeated phrase "Be keen and smart and beautiful. Learn to have a family. Again, welcome to Life 101," emphasizing the expected mold of a "perfect" person - intelligent, attractive, and heterosexual with a family.

I've known about this mix for a long time. No one seems to know the origin for this mix at all. The original lyrics are indeed from a Call me Alice tune called life 101, but near as I can tell this isn't CMA. I've researched Rasputina thoroughly and haven't found any reference for this tune. It's a mystery. I've been listening to THIS mix since 2003 though.

The confusion comes from Napster (early 2000’s) era when people would put mislabeled mp3s on file sharing servers all the time (why? who TF knows)... I listened to Call Me Alice other songs and they’re ok, a bit cheesy and cybergoth (in other words, dated)... not nearly as good as Switchblade or Rasputina, but if you’re nostalgic for Y2K goth techno, go for it.

Right, kazaa and limewire too because I believe it was limewire where i first found this song back then and it was labelled as rasputina so for the longest time i assumed it was a rasputina song without even noticing theres no cello and the vocals sound like strangely tuned and poppy version of melora's voice so couldnt have been rasputina. Makes more sense now, but still enjoy the song just as much.

scared me for a second, made me doubt the completion of my ss catalog

Nikita G

The song has been done by Call me Alice, but it sounds completely different when they sing it. So this version is not by them.

charmed1ify

The voice in the background kind of sounds like Prue from Charmed when she turned into a man...
