Sweethaven
Rasputina Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
God must love us
We the people
Love Sweethaven
Hurray hurray Sweethaven
Flags are wavin'
Swept people from the sea
Safe from democracy
Put here for you and me
Sweethaven
Sweet Sweethaven
God must love us
We the people
Of Sweethaven
God must have landed here
Why else would he strand us here
Where the air is nice and clear
Sweethaven even sounds so near
To Heaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
The lyrics of Rasputina's song "Sweethaven" paint the picture of a utopia - a place that is safe, sweet, and full of hope. The opening line, "Sweet Sweethaven, God must love us," immediately sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer speaks of a place where democracy has failed and people have had to flee - presumably from war or political turmoil. But Sweethaven is different. Swept from the sea and put there for the people, it is a place where they can be safe, happy, and free. The melody is bright and cheerful, with the sound of waving flags and the repeated exclamation of "hurray hurray Sweethaven" contributing to the sense of celebration.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer feels that Sweethaven is a gift from God. They ask why else would they be stranded in such a perfect place, where the air is clear and sweet, and even the name sounds like heaven? They are certain that Sweethaven will always be blessed by God. The final line, "God will always bless Sweethaven," is repeated three times, cementing the belief that this place is special and will always be protected.
Overall, "Sweethaven" is a song about hope - hope for a better life, hope for safety, and hope for a place where people can truly thrive. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there can be bright spots of joy and beauty that make life worth living.
