You And I
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes when I'm down and all alone
Just like a child without a home
The love you give me keeps me hangin' on
Oh honey, all I ever need is you
You're my first love, you're my last
You're my future, you're my past
And loving you is all I ask, honey
All I ever need is you
Winters come and they go, and we watch the melting snow
Sure as summer follows spring, all the things you do
Give me a reason to build my world around you
Some men follow rainbows, I am told
Some men search for silver some for gold
I have found my treasure in your soul, honey
All I ever need is you
Without love I'd never find the way
Through ups and downs of every single day

I won't sleep at night until you say, my honey
All I ever need is you

Overall Meaning

The song All I Ever Need Is You by Ray Charles is a love song that expresses the deep emotional connection between two people. The lyrics portray a sense of vulnerability and dependence on his partner's love. The opening lines of the song describe the singer's feelings of being lost and alone without his lover. He feels like a child without a home, suggesting that his partner is his emotional support and comfort. However, the love that he receives from his lover keeps him going, symbolized through the line "The love you give me keeps me hangin' on." This line emphasizes the importance of the partner's love in keeping the singer emotionally stable.

The chorus of the song is the most significant part of the lyrics as it sums up the entire meaning of the song. The repeated line "All I ever need is you" emphasizes the singer's reliance on his partner's love. He declares his partner as his first and last love, past, and future. He needs nothing else but his partner's love, and it's all he asks for. The song's theme of love and dependency is prevailing throughout, and the singer's assurance that he has found his treasure in his partner's soul is one of the most poignant lines of the song.

You give your hand to me
And then you say "Hello"
And I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don't know me, no
No, you don't know the one
Who dreams of you each night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
To you I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
No, you don't know me
I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you, yeah
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye"
And I watched you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
I know you'll never know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
But I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
I'm afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye"
And I watched you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
I say you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
No, you don't know me
No, you don't know me

During my career as a drummer, I played this tune with Ray many times. Thanks for the memories.

@nickt8564

Wow I’m so jealous we don’t have artists even close to this that we other drummers could aspire to play for these days

@richardbwanika2166

Wow!! Consider yourself one of the lucky few

This so makes me think of my Dad who died just short of the millennium. I'm crying even as I text. I miss my Dad, and I'm 72 years old. It never goes away, especially when listening to music like this.

@belsaye47

I'm 78 and still miss my dad

@mikeguerrero72

I know what you mean Liz. I'm 70 years old and I lost my Mom this last March 27. It hasn't been very long so that's why it still hurts a lot. I try to look at it like at least I had my Mom for 70 years. I suppose it's never easy huh?

I too am 72, albeit a year after your comment. Both of my parents passed in 2016. I heart has been limping along ever since, i get it.

@@stuartweissman7306 Limping along. Excellent description of my feelings today. It's tougher some days than others.
