Love Is The Sweetest Thing
Ray Noble And His Orchestra; Vocals: Al Bowlly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What else on earth could ever bring
Such happiness to ev'rything
As Love's old story.
Love is the strangest thing
No song of birds upon the wing
Shall in our hearts more sweetly sing
Whatever heart may desire
Whatever fate may send
This is the tale that never will tire.
This is the song without end.
Love is the greatest thing
The oldest yet, the latest thing
I only hope that fate may bring
Love's story to you.
The opening lines of the song, "Love is the sweetest thing, What else on earth could ever bring," sets the tone of the song as a paean to the power of love. The song's title itself suggests that 'love' is the most significant human experience. The chorus repeats this sentiment, with the second verse adding that "Love is the strangest thing" and it is as mysterious as the beauty of birdsong. The third verse then brings the universal appeal of love to the forefront, with the declaration that "Whatever heart may desire, Whatever fate may send, This is the tale that never will tire, This is the song without end."
The song is about the power of love and how it can make life better, no matter what else is going on. Love, according to the song, is not just one of the many things that can make us happy, but the one thing that is always there for us, even when everything else is falling apart. The repetition of the phrase 'Love's old story' throughout the song suggests that this is a timeless idea that has been spoken of throughout human history.

Just recently I found this song on 78 at a local thrift shop, I also found "the very thought of you," at the same store funny enough, if only I could find "midnight the stars and you," or "its all forgotten now," but hey, I'm happy with these two gems
@MattKlocke
Both of those are very rare, I previously owned Midnight, the stars and you. Unfortunately, My dog cracked it when I was on holiday.
@lolo-be7wr
@Matt Klocke I'm so sorry, alas a doggo is more important than an LP
@MattKlocke
@lolo 2004 Its ok, I hope to find another one soon
@MrDaiseymay
@Matt Klocke What----another Dog ? If so, don't show him how to play the records.
@MattKlocke
@Philip Croft I didn't, it was my fault, I left it on a spot that he could reach, and he's a curious dog [springer spaniel].
