Razorlight is a four-piece consisting of Borrell (vocals & guitar), Björn Ågren (guitar), Carl Dalemo (bass) and Andy Burrows (drums)
Their debut album, Up All Night, was released on June 28, 2004, reaching number 3 in the UK album charts on 4 July. The critical reception was generally good, receiving good reviews from NME, Q magazine and Billboard, although they were also accused of lack of imagination and unoriginality for allegedly borrowing ideas from other influential bands, notably The Strokes. They appear to polarize opinion. NME wrote that the album: "bristles with passion, energy and, most importantly, amazing songs", while they were described elsewhere as "nearly everything wrong with rock and roll today". Their fans, though, embrace the music for its simple melodies and multi-layered, easy-going compositions.
Frontman Johnny Borrell caused some controversy and surprise when he likened himself to musical legend Bob Dylan, quipping "If Dylan's making the chips then I'm drinking the champagne". This led to suggestions of self-promotion. This statement was taken out of context however as Borrell was comparing his and Dylan's first albums, not their overall career. The band became very popular on the London music scene when they arrived earlier in the year. Large demand caused the band to play extra shows, including a 7,000+ capacity gig at Alexandra Palace. The album was heavily marketed in the UK.
Yes You Should Know

You say "just think about all the things that you've got"
You're right from your side, and I'm right from mine
But you know I'll get you next time
All that I know here
Is you should be going
Your hair is too long, girl
Your clothes are all wrong
Maybe you should know
Maybe you should know, no no no no
Yes, you should know
And you sit back, you pull the shade
You say "ah, we've really got it made"
But I look out the window straight past you
You would understand, but you just don't have a clue
Your heels are too high, girl
Let's say goodbye, girl
Your hair is too long, girl
Your looks are all wrong, girl
Your playing for time, girl
Your wasting all mine, girl
And now that you're leaving
I really think that
Baby, you should know
Baby, you should know, yes
Yes, you should know, no no no no
Yes, you should know
I think I'm right
I know you're wrong
I could have just strung you along
I've got a feeling that it's going to rain
I look out my old door and I let you in again
And now that you know
I'm getting up to go
If I could show you
Oh yes I would
Your hair is too long, girl
Your clothes are all wrong, girl
You're playing for time, girl
You're wasting all mine
And maybe you should know...
Yes, you should know
Yes, you should know
Yes, you should know
Know, know, know, know
...
Yes, you should know
Yes, you should know
I wish you would know
Yes, you should know
Yes, you should know
Yes, you should know
The lyrics to Razorlight's track "Yes You Should Know" present an interesting dynamic between two people in a romantic relationship. The first verse highlights a disagreement between the two, with the singer explaining that while they may seem happy from the outside, they know that they're not. The other person tries to reassure them, suggesting that they focus on what they do have rather than what they don't. Despite this, the singer still feels validated in their own perspective, stating that they'll "get you next time" - implying that the disagreement is an ongoing battle that they have between them.
The second verse shows the singer looking out the window, feeling detached from their partner who is sitting next to them. They suggest that their partner wouldn't understand how they're feeling, even if they tried. They criticize their partner's appearance and attitude, suggesting that they're playing games and wasting time. It's clear that the relationship is strained and the singer feels frustrated with the other person's behaviour.
Despite all this tension and turmoil, the song ends on a somewhat ambiguous note. The singer claims that they could have "strung [the other person] along" but ultimately decides to leave. They wish that they could show their partner something, but don't elaborate on what that might be. The final repetition of the line "yes, you should know" seems to be almost accusatory - emphasizing the fact that the other person should have known better or acted differently. Overall, the song seems to be about the complexities of a romantic relationship and the challenges of reconciling two different perspectives.
