Above All
Rebecca St. James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began
Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure what You're worth

Crucified
Laid behind the stone
You lived to die, rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground

You took the fall and thought of me
Above all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Rebecca St. James's Above All are a beautiful representation of the greatness, majesty and love of God. The song celebrates the superiority of God over everything in existence. The opening line, "Above all powers, above all kings," affirms that God is above all systems of governance, every person who holds power, and every force or authority in the universe. Even the wonders of the natural world and everything created by man pale in comparison to the power, wisdom and greatness of God, who has existed since before the creation of the universe. The lyrics go on to state that there is no measure for God's value or worth, surpassing even the wealth and treasures of the earth.

The second half of the song speaks of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. The lyrics, "Crucified, laid behind the stone, you lived to die, rejected and alone," are a powerful reference to Christ's crucifixion and his burial in a tomb, and the idea that he was alone in his suffering. The metaphor of Christ being like a rose that is trampled on the ground is a stirring image that evokes strong emotions. Despite this, Christ still thought of humanity, and demonstrated the ultimate act of love and redemption by taking the fall for our sins, and ultimately rising again. The tagline, "Above all," serves as a reminder that even through this ultimate sacrifice, God and Jesus are still above all things in the universe.
