Dani California
Red Hot Chili Peppers Lyrics

Getting born in the state of Mississippi
Papa was a copper, and her mama was a hippy
In Alabama she would swing a hammer
Price you got to pay when you break the panorama
She never knew that there was anything more than poor
What in the world does your company take me for?
Black bandanna, sweet Louisiana
Robbing on a bank in the state of Indiana
She's a runner
Rebel, and a stunner
On her merry way saying baby, watcha gonna?
Looking down the barrel of a hot metal forty-five
Just another way to survive

California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah

She's a lover, baby, and a fighter
Should've seen it coming when I got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya
A little loaded, she was stealing another breath
I love my baby to death

California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Who knew the other side of you?
Who knew that others died to prove?
Too true to say goodbye to you
Too true to say, say, say

Pushed the fader, gifted animator
One for the now, and eleven for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man
Wasn't gunnin' for the quota
Down in the Badlands she was saving the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone too fast

California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah

California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess
I'm your priest
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Folks Lyric Meaning :

1. "... The song is about a friend of Anthony Kiedis', a girl named "dani", who commited suicide.
She lived a crazy life: was pregnant as a teen, robbed banks, was a prostitute, did drugs, was poor her entire life.
She was such a wild child because of what the world has turned into.
Because California is a trend setting city and is becoming such a bad place (Californication).
Anthony knows what a great person she could have been if she wasn't born into such a cruel world.
He fell in love with her after her suicide and fell that much further from love with society, "simultanious release"....or that is just a sexual refrence..ha
Anthony knows "what others have died to proove" and this song is a simple tribute to his friend dani and he is singing about how she won't be lost and a lesson will be learned from her life. Nb."dani" just a name. its refer to many girls who walk that life"

2. "...“Dani California” is actually a lady who also serves as the subject of this song. She has a wild, rebellious and you can say even criminal spirit which causes her to get into serious trouble.
For instance, despite being born in Mississippi, the first verse seems to indicate that Dani got locked up in Alabama. The specific reason is not given, but generally speaking she is, as mentioned earlier, depicted as being the type of person who does not submit to authority. In fact it would appear that she goes on a multi-State robbing spree, sporting a “black bandana”, which is indicative of violent-criminal behavior, in Louisiana in addition to “robbing… a bank” in Indiana. Indeed the singer, Anthony Kiedis, describes her as a “runner, rebel and a stunner” who lives life on the edge.

And that last attribute, “stunner”, would logically point to the idea of Dani being physically attractive. This is important because she is obviously someone the singer was romantically involved with, although he doesn’t really expound on their relationship in the lyrics. However, Anthony is on record as having said that the titular character is actually a personification of every woman he has romanced up until that point in his life. And there are actual hints alluding to this idea in the song. For instance, he calls her his “priestess” and himself her “priest”. Moreover he concludes the second verse by stating, in reference to Dani, that he ‘loves his baby to death’.

And to make a long story short, Dani California’s ungoverned lifestyle does eventually catch up to her in the form of she being slain by a law-enforcement official in Minnesota. The whole account of her death is sketchy, as said officer apparently shot her in the name of fulfilling a quota. But that does not negate the fact that the entire song was leading up to this moment. Or put differently, Dani’s life was on a course where the narrator knew that eventually the ‘day was going to come when he was going to mourn her’.

3. "...this is the tale of a woman who was apparently ill-fated from birth. She was born in poverty and decided to engage in a freewheeling, outlaw lifestyle. And ultimately that leads to Dani California meeting her untimely demise, much to the chagrin of the narrator of this story, who had feelings for her. "

4. "...According to lead singer Anthony Kiedis, "Dani" is a representation of every girl that he's come across in his life. "Dani" also appears in the 2002 Red Hot Chili Peppers song "By The Way" and is the "Teenage bride with the baby inside" on their 1999 song "Californication.""

5. "..."Throughout the song, lyricist Anthony Kiedis laments the early death of Dani, a poor, young Southern girl who eventually lived in California, became a mother and lived a hard, fast, unsettled life.Kiedis has commented that the character of "Dani" is an embodiment of all the women with whom he has had relationships. The song narrates much of Dani's life, starting with her birth in Mississippi and apparently culminating with her death in the badlands of North Dakota"

Song Fact :

~ The bands that the Peppers dress up in during the video caused internet debate about who the actual bands were. Though nothing is official, it starts out in a '50s early rock setting, with Anthony Kiedis dressed as Elvis Presley. It then moves on to a stereotypical British rock band that you would see on The Ed Sullivan Show in the '60s. They move on to a stereotypical psychedelic rock band, then the funk era. The band is dressed as Parliamant/Funkadelic, complete with Flea dressed as one of his idols, Bootsy Collins, and the P-Funk Mothership stage prop. It moves on to a stereotypical glam rock band, then gothic band, most likely The Misfits based on the way Kiedis is dressed. Then it moves on to the punk movement, hair metal, and grunge. The grunge band is one of the more clear bands to identify, as Kiedis is dressed like his friend Kurt Cobain, of Nirvana. It ends with the Peppers as a sum up of all of these bands.
