How Do You Sleep
Replicants Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So Sgt. Pepper took you
By surprise
You better see right through that
Mother's eyes
Those freaks was right when they said
You was dead
The one mistake you made was
In your head
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
You live with straights who tell you
You was king
Jump when your mamma tell you
Anything
The only thing you've done was
Yesterday
And since you're gone you're just
Another day
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh
How do you sleep?
Sleep at night
A pretty face may last one
Year or two
But pretty soon they'll see what
You can do
The sound you make is music
To my ears
You must have learnt something
All those years
Oh
How do you sleep?
Oh

How do you sleep?
Sleep at night

Overall Meaning

The Replicants’ “How Do You Sleep” is a song that is largely considered as John Lennon’s response to Paul McCartney after the Beatles disbanded in 1970. Lennon took a swipe at McCartney in this song, painting him as someone who was deluded about his own status as a musician. The opening lines, “So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise, you better see right through that mother's eyes” are a direct reference to the Beatles classic album ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Lennon is insinuating that McCartney allowed the album’s success to go to his head.

The song suggests that Paul McCartney had lost his edge and was reliant upon his mother and his fans to make decisions for him. The lyrics “You live with straights who tell you were king, Jump when your mamma tell you anything. The only thing you've done was yesterday and since you're gone you’re just another day” emphasize that McCartney could not make decisions without his mother and that he was no longer relevant as a musician since the disbandment of the Beatles.

The lyrics, “A pretty face may last one year or two, but pretty soon they'll see what you can do. The sound you make is music to my ears, you must have learned something all those years” shows Lennon’s frustration towards McCartney’s lack of creativity and growth as a musician. Lennon believes that McCartney had not grown as a musician in the years since the Beatles disbanded and that he was just living off his past successes.

This is such a fantastic cover. Shame none of the streaming services feature this album.

@Eatwithureyes

I bought this album in the mid 90's it's still sounds good as of late. This song in particular was a favorite of a couple of old hippies i worked with they turned me on to a lot of good " out there literature " and diverse opinions on everything.
I stiil talk them to this day.

@ajaxStardust

The Band's name comes from a Phillip K Dick novel. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", or the film interpretation... Blade Runner.

@scottstephens6008

Phil Dick lol

@gimmedataids

Fitting that they covered "Are Friends Electric?"

@zardozmania

This Lennon song is 'coded' he's talking about McCartney being dead, having died early on and having been replaced by a double. He couldn't just come right out and say it....Ringo's been trying to say it for years...

@MrBillybonkers

Interestingly, the replacement was even more talented and a better songwriter than the original. What are the chances, eh?

@funklover247

simply awesome
