Silly Love Songs
Replicants Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'd think that people would have had enough
Of silly love songs
I look around me and I see
It isn't so
Some people wanna fill the world of
Silly love songs

And what's wrong with that?
I need to know
Cause here I go
Again

I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

I can't explain
The feeling's plain to me
I gave you some
Now give it all to me
Give it all to me

What's wrong with that?
I need to know
Cause here I go
Again

I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

Love doesn't come in a minute
Sometimes it doesn't come at all
I only know that when I'm in it
It isn't silly
Love isn't silly
Love isn't silly at all

I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

How can I tell you about my loved one?
How can I tell you about my loved one?

Overall Meaning

The Replicants's song Silly Love Songs is a cover of the original song by Paul McCartney and Wings. The opening line of the chorus, "You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs," seems to suggest that there is a societal pressure to avoid expressing love in a way that is perceived as silly or sentimental. Despite this, the lyrics dismiss this idea, stating that some people still want to fill the world with silly love songs, and questioning why there is anything wrong with that.

The repetition of the phrase "I love you" reinforces the idea that expressing love is not something to be ashamed of, and that it is a feeling that is universally experienced. The lines "Love doesn't come in a minute / Sometimes it doesn't come at all / I only know that when I'm in it / It isn't silly" suggest that love is not something that can be rushed or forced, but when it is felt, it is a powerful and important emotion that is far from silly or frivolous.

Overall, the song seems to be a celebration of love, and a rejection of the idea that it is something to be embarrassed about or avoid expressing. The repetition of the chorus, along with the upbeat and catchy melody of the song, make it a fun and lighthearted expression of this sentiment.

I’ve always loved this cover and Just What I Needed. They are so underrated and so is Failure. Hopefully, the new Failure documentary will shine a light on how instrumental they have been in others’ careers and how talented they truly are.

Greg Edwards (guitarist/bassist/keyboardist in Failure, guitarist/keyboard/vox for Autolux) is the unsung drummer on this track & album, and this song has always been a stand out and source of inspiration for me. Totally nails the slower tempo rock - it's like a more psychedelic version of Saturday Savior.

Tariq Sharif

Interesting take. I kind of take as a follow up to the Nurse who loved me. But a quick anecdote: I played Saturday for some friends in college back in 98 and the response was, “ That’s some white boy pimp shit”

Nice catch! Love me some Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards.

Damn, this is a sick cover. I had a feeling coming to this album knowing Ken and Greg were involved that it was gonna be a grand slam into outer space.
