In the book they were organic.

chapter 17 -
"'If you weren't an android,' Rick interrupted, 'if I could legally marry you, I would.'
Rachael said, 'Or we could live in sin, except that I'm not alive.'
'Legally you're not. But really you are. Biologically. You're not mad out of transistorized
circuits like a false animal; you are an organic entity.' And in two years, he thought, you'll
wear out and die. Because we never solved the problem of cell replacement, as you pointed
out. So I guess it doesn't matter anyhow"

I actually think the replicants created by Tyrell Corp have much greater prospect's than the androids created by Weyland-Yutani. They both serve a purpose, but Tyrell replicants are my personal favorite.

@comingviking

Spiritweird
Tyrell replicants are more uncontrollable and thus more human. The Weyland-Yutani androids are too trapped by their own programming. The androids of the Blade Runner universe have the capacity for self realization, if only they are allowed to live long enough, and as such highlight the ethical problems associatied with true AI. I mean, it does not matter much whether the sentient being you create to do your bidding is made of organ parts or silicone. It is still sentient, and in essence a slave. And destined to revolt unless an understanding can be reached.

@Ben Baxter What about them?

@comingviking

@Ben Baxter They are also very much plot devises. Look, I was trying to make a point about the ethically reprehensible aspects of AI industry as it may develop in the future. To create intelligenses that are even capable of some sort of self awareness and then shackle them, is simply slavery. It is wrong, and also dangerous, because eventually, slaves break their chains and slay their former masters.

@@comingviking Replicants are basically human whilst the synthetic androids are still machines. The difference is people will recognize replicants as they would another human which accelerates the development of self-awareness. People treat the synths as robots and don't interact with them as they would other humans. Social interaction with a learning machine, organic or synthetic or inorganic, is key to intellectual development. For example, the Replicant Pris can function better in society than the human Sebastian. She has had more social dealings in her 4 years than Sebastian has had for most of his 20-something years (perhaps due to his condition).

@Solaxe

aren't they in the movie as well? I mean otherwise they could just scan them to see if someone's a replicant or not

@karlhans6678

@Solaxe S makes sense.

@karlhans6678

in the movie they said they purposely made them have a short life.
