Born in Oxford, England, Lewis grew up in a family of teachers with two brothers, an older brother named Tom and a twin brother named George. His passion for music began at the age of 13 when he started playing the guitar. However, it was only later, after joining his brothers' band, that he began singing. Lewis attended Bartholomew School in Eynsham and also worked as a 'dinner lady' at Cokethorpe School. At the age of 19, he moved to London to study at the London Centre of Contemporary Music.
Lewis initially started writing songs and performing under the moniker Rhys Lewis & the Relics. His talent caught the attention of Decca Records, which led to the release of his debut solo single, "Waking Up Without You," in late 2016. Over the next year, he released several successful singles, including "Be Your Man" and "Reason to Hate You," gaining millions of streams. Lewis embarked on tours with James TW and JP Cooper during this time.
In 2018, Lewis released his major-label debut, the Bad Timing EP, which further solidified his growing fan base. The EP showcased his soul and blues influences, with his distinctive singing style and guitar skills shining through. Lewis continued to release a string of successful singles in 2019, setting the stage for his debut album, Things I Chose to Remember, which was released in July 2020. The album stands out as it was recorded on analogue tape, a deliberate choice by Lewis to ensure meticulous attention to detail and clarity in the music.
Lewis draws inspiration from artists such as Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, whose lyrics resonated with him as a songwriter. He also cites influences from Led Zeppelin and Bill Withers, particularly the latter's song "Lean On Me."
His songwriting covers various aspects of his life, addressing topics such as the portrayal of men in the media, mental health, and personal relationships. Many of his songs revolve around themes of heartbreak, including "When Was The Last Time," "Be Your Man," and "Hurting." Lewis finds performing his song "No Right To Love You" particularly challenging due to its connection to a personal heartbreak, as it evokes intense emotions and memories associated with the breakup.

Goin' outta my mind
Thinking a million things a second
When I'm outta my depth
And trouble's over my head
Yeah, whenever my life gets heavy
They'll always be there for me
When I'm lost, I'm lucky I've got
Good people helpin' me out
Yeah, I've got good people there when I'm down
Yeah, I've got good people liftin' me up
When I'm low, I'm lucky I know good people
When I was pretty much spent
After payin' my rent
And I could barely afford a coffee
When she was kickin' me out
And I showed up unannounced
With all of my things in boxes
They've always been there for me
They've always been there for me
When I'm lost, I'm lucky I've got
Good people helpin' me out
Yeah, I've got good people there when I'm down
Yeah, I've got good people liftin' me up
When I'm low, I'm lucky I know good people
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
So tell 'em how it is, how you couldn't live
Without the love they give
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
So tell 'em how it is, how you couldn't live
Without the love they give
We've all got good people in life to be thankful for
I'm lucky I got
Good people helpin' me out
Yeah, I've got good people there when I'm down
Yeah, I've got good people liftin' me up
When I'm low, I'm lucky I know good people
Lucky I know
(Good people)
Lucky I know
(Good people)
(Good people)
Rhys Lewis's "Good People" is a song that expresses deep gratitude for the people who remain there for us no matter what. The first verse mentions how the singer thinks a million things a second when lying at night and how he feels so overwhelmed and out of depth when trouble is over his head. However, he gains solace in the thought of having good people. A central theme of the song is how good people lift us up when we're down and help us out when we're lost, a reminder that we should never forget or take for granted the love and support that surrounds us.
The second verse tells a story of how he was broke and couldn't afford coffee after paying rent and how his girlfriend kicked him out. When he showed up, unexpectedly with his life's belongings packed in boxes, good people, presumably his close friends or family, opened their doors for him. They were always there for him regardless of the situation, reminding him that he's never alone. The chorus reinforces the central message of the song, stating that we all have good people to be grateful for, and we should make sure to tell them how important they are to us.

TCM brought me here. Had to back up the channel and turn on Shazam. Always refreshing to find a new artist (to me) that you can instantly enjoy as I have a 3 second rule with music. This song evokes family members gone, friends long ago; All Good People. Thanks Rhys
