I Love To Laugh
Richard M. Sherman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me.
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.

Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
I'm in the mood for love?

Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid!

If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it

But for tonight, forget it!
I'm in the mood for love

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are all about being in love and feeling romantic when the person you love is near. The singer expresses how they feel when they are close to their love interest, saying that simply being close to them puts them in the mood for love. The lyrics talk about how the person's eyes are like heaven, shining as bright as the stars above them. The singer wonders if it's any surprise that they feel so in love when they're near someone so wonderful.

The lyrics also touch on the idea that sometimes it's better not to worry too much about the future or whether things will work out. The singer talks about how they and their love interest have put their hearts together, and now they are one. They're not afraid of what's to come because they have each other.

The final verse of the song is especially romantic, where the singer says that even if there are storms or bad weather, they will stay together and weather the storm. They will focus on the present moment and their love for each other. The overall message of the song is that when two people are in love, everything else fades away, and they're just left with the overwhelming feeling of love for each other.

Yeah, but time actually has been kind to the song, cause when I saw "Mary Poppins" for the first time back in about 1980, I had no problem with it (granted at least in the movie you had Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke singing as well as Ed Wynn; though when I listened to this version for the first time in a long time a few years ago, I wasn't sure what to think). Granted, it might have been harder to get over it had it been one of the better-known songs in the movie.

It's from the Disneyland Records Album "10 Songs from Mary Poppins" (DQ-1256) with Marni Nixon and Bill Lee.

First comment! When I was little, I dreaded listening to this song, because, for some reason, laughing things tended to creep me out.
