I remember this so vividly. Interesting to contrast how we came home to an unfortunate reception in contrast to the way an evacuation was conducted in Afghanistan nearly half century later. Our military personnel remain the greatest. Both wars went longer than anyone wanted. The Afghan war could have ended after eight to 12 years, but that is not to be debated here. The difference to note is a contrast on how the U.S. looks on a world stage now in comparison to then.

What likely made the response even more toxic was the intense media coverage of U.S. soldiers' war crimes, as well as the fact that Communism was at record high levels of support among American young adults. Many wanted the Cold War as a whole to end then and there, and expand detente to full peace. It was only when Mao died and especially when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan that support for detente was shattered. I think that went a long way in disillusioning folks who a few years earlier had sympathy for Marxism-Leninism. After the shoot down of KAL 007, hatred of the Soviets finally returned to pre-Vietnam levels.

@Thunderbird 1 Gorbachev era was more calm.

@jake8855

You mean how the US was embarrassed both times?

@starter47990

If not for Watergate, Nixon would have been one of the greatest Presidents of all time

@coconutmacaroon4907

Nixon was pure slime. He negotiated in secret, as a candidate for President, with the both the North and Southern Vietnamese to undercut the peace agreed to with the outgoing Johnson administration. The war continued for five more years so that Tricky Dick could get elected and reelected. His depravity may only be matched by Trump. What a treasonous POS! .

@89stebu

I think he would’ve been revered as much as Truman or Eisenhower.

@starter47990

@S B agreed

@joewhitehead3

@Shawn Gill At least Nixon had the decency to resign

@jakobheidenreich5

I think Nixon was much better in foreign policy than in domestic
