That Kind of Man
Ring of Fire Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What they are sayin' seems so absurd
It can't be true
I can't believe it, it can't be you
Are you that kind of man?
I just don't understand
Why don't you show your hand?
You're that kind of man
Heaven and earth
Fall from your fingers, what is it worth
Where is the crime
Why does it linger, wasting your time
Aren't you concerned
Aren't you preparing your crash and burn
Are you that kind of man?
I just don't understand
Why don't you show your hand?
I keep hearing
You're that kind of man
Now you're going down
Got those photographs you denied
You look like a clown
So surprised
The lyrics in Ring of Fire's song "That Kind of Man" seem to be about a woman's disbelief and confusion about a man's behavior. The chorus repeatedly asks, "Are you that kind of man?" as if questioning whether or not he is capable of acting in a way that others have described him. The singer seems to be struggling with the idea that the man has done something wrong and is slowly being exposed, hence the mention of "photographs" in the last verse.
The overall tone of the song is one of disappointment and possibly even disgust. The woman can't believe that someone she thought she knew could possibly be capable of such behavior. She asks why he doesn't "show his hand" and wonder why he won't come clean about whatever he may have done. The mention of "heaven and earth" falling from his fingers could be interpreted as the man having a lot to lose if he doesn't come clean soon. There's a sense of urgency in the lyrics, as if the woman knows the truth is about to come out and she's trying to protect herself from being caught up in the scandal.
Overall, "That Kind of Man" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of putting your trust in someone who may not deserve it. It's a reminder that people aren't always what they seem, and that sometimes it's best to heed the warning signs before it's too late.
