Dear Miami

You can be so self-absorbed
Behind those eyes, no disguise
Disguise, no you can't disguise
Behind this fortress of an address
Stuck in the passion void
With a little style full and for a while
But you can't turn back time
Dear Miami
You're the first to go
Disappearing
Under melting snow
Each and everyone
Turn your critical eye
On the burning sun
And try not to cry
Strictly rolling V. I. P.
Strictly rolling V. I. P.
We got it all
The empire ever falls
We got all control, untold power to
Do what we wanna do
We got the moves
But there's nothing left to prove
There's only stardust memories
We can make come true
Dear Miami
You're the first to go
Disappearing
Under melting snow
Each and everyone
Turn your critical eye
On the burning sun
And try not to cry
Dear Miami
You're the first to go
Disappearing
Under melting snow
Each and everyone
Turn your critical eye
On the burning sun
And try not to cry
Merry-go-round again
A carousel
Passionate raid
An escapade

The lyrics of "Dear Miami" by Róisín Murphy explore the idea of excess and the price that comes with it. The opening verse describes a person who is self-absorbed and trapped in a "fortress" of their own making. Despite their outward style, they are stuck in a passionless void and unable to turn back time. The song then turns to address Miami, a city known for its glitz and glamour, as it disappears under "melting snow." The chorus urges listeners to turn their "critical eye" on the burning sun and try not to cry, suggesting a sense of impending doom.
The second verse speaks of the power and control that come with excess, with the singer asserting that "we got it all" and there is "nothing left to prove." Despite this apparent confidence, the lyrics suggest a sense of fleetingness, with only "stardust memories" left to make come true. The song ends with a series of repeating lines, describing a carousel and a "passionate raid" before returning to the chorus again.
Overall, "Dear Miami" seems to be a commentary on the high life and the way it can ultimately lead to emptiness and a sense of detachment from reality. The Miami setting serves as a stand-in for any city or lifestyle that promises excess and excitement but ultimately leaves the singer feeling hollow.
