New World...
Robert Plant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In songs we praise a happy landing
On yet another virgin shore
Escape the booming world
Embrace the new world
Out here the immigrant takes hold
Across the planes and over mountains
Put flight to all who came before
They're barely human
It's time to move them
And let them kneel before the sword

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

Uneducate the noble savage
The great white father's word is lore
It's such a pain then to liberate them
The poison on the bloody sword

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

Oh oh, uh uh uh, oh oh

Oh oh, uh uh uh, oh oh
Oh oh, uh uh uh, oh oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Robert Plant's song "New World" delve into the dark history of colonialism and the oppression of indigenous peoples. The opening lines reveal an enthusiastic colonialist perspective, as the singer praises the idea of a "happy landing" on a "virgin shore", eager to escape the "booming world" and "embrace the new world". This is followed by a line that seems to acknowledge the brutality and dehumanization of colonialism, as the singer asserts that "out here the immigrant takes hold". The language of "immigrant" suggests a kind of peaceful migration or settlement, masking the reality of violent conquest and displacement.

The subsequent lines make this violence more explicit, speaking of crossing "planes and over mountains" to put "flight" to those who came before. The dehumanization of indigenous people is made clear in the statement that "they're barely human", positioning them as inferior and unworthy of the land they have lived on for generations. The call to "let them kneel before the sword" is a stark reminder of the violence and domination that characterized colonialism.

The repeated refrain of "oh oh, uh uh uh, oh oh" is almost taunting in tone, like a colonialist triumphantly celebrating their conquest. The final lines of the song reveal the insidious nature of colonialism: the "noble savage" must be "uneducated" and taught to accept the "great white father's word" as "lore". The "poison on the bloody sword" is a metaphor for the violence that underpins colonialism.

This is a killer song.
Every time Plant comes out with something, he re-establishes himself as a top notch contributor and performer. My life would not be the same if it wasn't for his solo music and Led Zeppelin.

I know how you feel. I was lucky enough to see Led Zeppelin 4 times in my life. I was very young the first time in 1970. They were my first concert. Over the years when things get tough; I always find Zeppelins music pulls you out of the doldrums. Like you I wanted to thank Zeppelin for the great music. I came across a friend of Roberts a few years back. When we got to know each other a bit; I asked her if I could email a thank you note to Robert. I told her I understand if you can't arrange it because your probably inundated with request all the time. She asked me to give her some time. About a month later she sent me a specific email address to send my email to Robert. Thank you KB.
